Jul-11-07 | | vonKrolock: *****<Schumann, the famous composer, born in 1810, in Zwickau, Germany, was an enthusiastic chess player. The "Robert-Schumann-Haus" is in possession of his own chess set, and many documents dealing with theme "Schumann and Chess". In his diaries he registered games he played, and endgame positions from a Manual. His friend and collaborator in the "Leipziger Neuen Zeitschrift für Musik", Hermann Hirschbach, played frequently with him, and founded the "Deutsche Schachzeitung"in 1846 > More here http://www.schumannzwickau.de/news_... |

Jul-14-07 | | vonKrolock: According to S. Poole: <"Robert Schumann considered a symbolic relationship between chess and music: the queen, the piece with the greatest freedom and power, represents melody, but the king represents harmony and is, thus, the final authority. Brahms once joked that he had learned nothing from Schumann except how to play chess."> another, found in different on-line source, involves one of the most famous xixth Century piano virtuosi, and enriched with a reference to S.'s music: <"Rudolf Heinrich Willmers (1921-78) who played music and composed chess problems. While playing Schumann's 'Carnival' in a piano recital in Copenhagen, Willmers stopped suddenly, wrote on his cuff, and then continued. He explained afterwards that he had been struggling for a week to solve a difficult problem when the solution came to him in a flash. 'I had to jot it down to get it out of my head and let me concentrate entirely on my playing.'"> My other source asserted that Willmers was not <sic> 'solving a problem', but rather searthing a path in chess composition; |

Jul-17-10 | | vonKrolock: < what is the relevance?> The relevance is evident per se, for Chess lovers and Music lovers alike. <They are hardly the same person?> Yes, they are surelly not the same person. Not even relatives, probably. A single score of an authentical game score of a game played by THE Schumann would be a wonder, worth headlines around the world. I wrote to that "House" where they keep Schumann's chess papers, but the research is not started, so far I know ... |
