EDOUARD PAPE
(born Apr-18-1870, died Mar-06-1949, 78 years old) France

[what is this?]

Edouard Pape was one of the players in the Cafe de la Regence (in Paris), and author of the chess-themed novel La variante F. VIII du Gambit Camulogene (1900). After losing interest in practical play he became the composer of more than 2000 chess problems, most of them two-movers. An antiquarian, he was president of the Union des Problemistes de France, and vice president of the international Good Companion Chess Problem Club. He liked to attend simuls of prominent players, where he defeated not only Pillsbury but also Janowski, Bernstein and Capablanca.* Brother of Louise Pape.

Being at present in the French Army, I cannot be of much help to the Club at present. I leave Paris again for the front tomorrow. If I am alive after the war you can depend on me to interest the French solvers and clubs in your tourneys. Am afraid I cannot arrange one of your 2 22-1916 tourney in one of the camps of the German Prisoners
