Jul-31-15  thomastonk: Well, I have some doubts that the Canadian Champion of 1887, George Barry, played the two game against Steinitz in Dublin 1865.

The Vienna was published in the "Illustrated London News", volume 47, 25 November 1865, page 523 as <Steinitz vs G.F. Barry>.

The King's Gambit Declined was published in "The Chess World", vol 1, December 1865, pages 300-301 as <Steinitz vs S. Barry>.

Jul-31-15  thomastonk: Thanks, <Stonehenge>! It seems this article confirms my doubts in the less doubtful case. ;-)

Tabanus: Born 1836 in Buttevant, Cork, Ireland, according to a private Ancestry tree. He had a brother Sam (Samuel?) who also played chess and may have played the King's Gambit.
Apr-24-16  ljfyffe: <thomastonk>Yes, not to be confused with Canadian players of the 1800's: John Barry, Palmerston Barry, and George Barry. In 1888 George Barry of Canada plays Showalter of US in an international North American postal tourney while George F. Barry is playing for the Irish chess team at that time in a correspondence match with England and Scotland.
