Dec-29-04  fasting: http://www.fide.com/ratings/topfed.... what is this? Myanmar, a country I've never heard of, where everybody seems to play pretty good chess, a rating top-ten almost the same as Sweden, and only one GM - the highest rated person Htun Htun Than is only a fide-master?!?
Dec-29-04  azaris: There was a scandal some years ago when suddenly a bunch of Burmese players obtained IM and GM norms all of a sudden. The allegation was they'd arranged many "rated" tournaments among a small pool of players to push up the ratings of some of their top players. I'm not sure if FIDE ever relinquished the unfairly obtained titles, or whether the titles were awarded in the first place.
Dec-29-04  MoonlitKnight: Myanmar = Burma
Jun-06-13  waustad: Rating fixing has been known to occur. One famous case is Claude Frizzel Bloodgood who scammed the USCF ratings while in prison.
Jun-06-13  waustad: How many of you are old enough to remember all of the Burma Shave ads painted all over?
Jun-06-13  Shams: He played/ a sax/ had no b.o./ but his whiskers scratched/ so she let him go./ Burma Shave!
Jun-06-13  Jim Bartle: But what made the Burma Shave signs unique is that each short line was on a separate sign. So you read the poen in sequence as you drove down the road.
Jun-06-13  waustad: I seem to recall Stuckys ads like the Burma Shave ones starting about 100 miles from each store. I guess Lady Bird's "highway beautification" campaign did all of those in, along with the advent of the interstate highways. Didn't mail pouch paint barns all over too? The farmer got his barn painted and the company got a big billboard for the cost of painting the barn.
