<A chess boxing champion has been ordered to pay £2,500 compensation to a referee who he attacked during a row about timekeeping.

Former policeman Andrew Costello was acting as timekeeper in the first ever bout of chess boxing staged in the South West when he lost his temper and attacked chess referee Rajko Vujatovic.

He was furious because his attempt to rig the bout in favour of a friend by cutting short the amount of time allowed for boxing was thwarted by the referee, who ignored the bell and allowed the contest to continue.

The 6’4’’ cage fighter nicknamed The Rock stormed around the outside of the ring and chinned the referee within seconds of him climbing over the ropes.>
