1878 bapt. register: Joannes Henricus Newman Clissold, b. 12 Jan 1878, bapt. 20 Jan 1878 in St Peter's Priory, Liverpool.

1939 England and Wales Register: Newman Clissold, b. 12 Jan 1878, widowed, Unemployed Corn Broker in Wallasey, Cheshire

1953: <Newman Clissold, Wallasey chess club captain, of New Brighton, further consolidated his lead in the sixth round of the major "A" section at Hastings International Chess Congress to-day, beating E. J. Seymour (High Wycombe). He is the only player among 100 competitors in the tournament with a maximum score. and is 2 1/2 points ahead of his nearest rival.> (Liverpool Echo, 5 Jan 1953, p. 8)

  Tabanus: There are several mentions of a "N. Clissold" playing chess from 1901 on in the Liverpool area. After 1954 I find no Clissold in the newspapers. So it may be the father, and if so he was about 75 when doing well in Hastings 1953. Is that hard to believe.
