Jean Defuse: ...
Oxford City Chess Magazine Oct. 1997 p. 8:
"Further to the visit of Dr Mieses, an invitation to take 10 boards was accepted, a notice advising members to be posted to the Club Notice Board. The display has been provisionally arranged to take pla ce in the Hall of Corpus Christi college, commencing at 2.30pm on Saturday the 5th February, and the estimated charge per board is 3/-." (From the Oxford City CC minutes of January 14, 1944.)
HANS SCHENK
The good doctor (of what, incidentally?) makes his first appearance in the minutes of 16 May 1939, as a supporting member. At the AGM (4 October) he was welcomed by the President (T H Tylor) along with Dr S Fazekas... " pointed out the international reputation of Dr Fazekas and Dr Schenk and said he supposed the Club was one of the strongest functioning at the present time. he also voiced the thanks of the Club to the Oxford Mail and the Oxford Times for the publicity given to the
Club's activities". By 20 October, he has been elected as a "prospective war member", the President stating " that as a player of International reputation he would be a source of enormous
strength to the Club".
Runner-up to Dr Fazekas in the Championship that year, having lost their match encounter (the finalists having won their respective sections), he was elected Vice-President at the following year's AGM. Subsequent minutes reveal him as a member of the University, who would play anyone who wanted a game, and he was helpful in organising (and occasionally starring in) simultaneous exhibitions. He died, still a club member, c. 1976.
It seems a little strange that the only game we have from a long-standing member (reproduced elsewhere) is in fact a demonstration of another's talent, and not the most appropriate epitaph.
Any man that can trap his own queen with the ingenuity that Hans Schenk did against Jacques Mieses deserves a chance to have those talents shown in a more positive light.
[Incidentally, the only minuted mention of a simultaneous exhibition by Jacques Mieses is that given at the top of the article, so "Mieses v Dr Schenk Oxford 1948" - as taken from Fox & James "Even More Complete Chess Addict" - is probably in error.]
