  fredthebear: Those of us who know our checkmate patterns by heart instantly see the queen sacrifice for Boden's mate, just like the Peruvian Immortal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boden...

I would like to know how the Black pawn got on g7... highly unusual in an honest game.

Maybe there was more than one Oopsie?

Jan-08-24  stone free or die: Well, there's a couple of more oopsies indeed.

(1) White was actually Jacques Mieses, who was 74 years old (or 76(?)) at the time the game was played! (He was in the Margate Premier Reserves C section, which I believe he won.)

My bad for the misidentification in the previous post, apologies.

(2) <<fredthebear> would like to know how the Black pawn got on g7... highly unusual in an honest game.>

All games start with a Black pawn on g7, <fred>, don't ya know!

* * * * *

(Of course <fred> meant a pawn on g6, but there's nothing dishonest about that.

Looking at <Millbase> I found 38099 out of 1.6M games - so yes, very small percentage-wise, but low probability events aren't inherently dishonest. In this case the pawn got there because it was the best move for Black.)
