[what is this?]
Dr. Geronimo Cascio was born in Sicily. In the early 1600s, he lost a chess match to Salvio and had to pay the debts of his backers who bet on him to win. In 1606, he defeated Polerio in Rome and was given a position in the palace of Jacopo Boncompagni. In 1620, he beat il Marano, a leading player of the day. Cascio supposedly invented the Muzio Gambit, then showed it to Senor Muzio. Muzio then showed it to Salvio, giving himself the credit for the invention.

Sep-01-18  kereru: I think it was a mistranslation by Sarratt rather than any dishonesty on the part of Signor Muzio d'Allesandro that resulted in the opening being called the Muzio Gambit. Salvio's original words:

"I will speak of another form of gambit, which was never previously thought of; and as far as I was informed by Signor Muzio d'Allesandro, a very kind gentleman and a very keen player, occurred between Signor Don Geronimo Cascio and another player in a casual game".

Hope my translation is ok. Please remove the libel on Signor Muzio!
