Phony Benoni: There are questions about this fellow's name. The one game we have was published by <Chess Review>, November 1942, p. 236, in Fred Reinfeld's "Reader's Games" feature. He states the game was from the "Yale Freshman Tournament 1942", but givens nother details about the player names other than "Blackall vs. Christian".

<Chess review> aslo has an "F S Blackall" in their postal chess ratings around this time.

On the other hand, Hermann Helms, (reporting on collegiate events involving Yale) consistently gives his name as "F Steele Bhackhall" or "F S Blackhall". (See, for example, ACB 1942, p. 107, or "NEw York Times, December 26, 1942).

Normally, I would prefer Helms for names of collegiate players. But, good grief, <Chess Review> was was getting correspondence from the guy entering their postal tournaments. They had to have known, didn't they?

'Sirs:
I have always felt that chess is a game that holds no prejudices, whether they be of race, color, religion, or national feeling. As long as Alekhine's games are brilliant, and so long as he is able to defend his title against the world's masters, chessplayers will want to see his games and will consider him world champion.

F. Steele Blackall III, New Haven, Connecticut [!], Chess Review, Letters, Jan 1943'

Obituaries (June 25, 1925 - April 18, 2017) do not mention chess particularly.

Trivia

Different spellings/single-letter-salad here could be a result of faulty electronically translated OCR 'error correction' when dealing with these 'older' (news)paper scans.

As always there could be several different (unknown) players out there busting all this, e.g. 1942 is borderline 'fresh' for this man. But no risk, no fun.

Closing with two dissatisfactory zero statements (could²) are no good for karma, so let's bring in some proper tune to make up for this again

Phony Benoni: <login> Thanks for all your work. I believe I'll request a change to "F Steele Blackall", that being the form he used himself in the letter to "Chess Review" and which also appears in his obituary.
