Nov-30-08  heuristic: H.G.Catley, Esq.
appears to be a highly regarded club player for a 20+ year period. is mentioned in
- 200 Chess Problems,
Frank Healey, 1866
(as a "subscriber")

- City of London Chess magazine
Potter, 1874
(played an odds game against Wyvill)

- The Chess Tournament
Harold Staunton, 1873
(was good enough to be nominated to the London 1851 tournament as the representative of London)

Jan-19-14  thomastonk: "The Era" of July 5, 1857 has two wins against Löwenthal at pawn and move. Very respectable.

  MissScarlett: <Henry Griffin Cattley? (1821 - Jan 16 1897)>

Very likely. A creditors' notice for this man that appeared after his death gives his late address as <32 Hyde-park-gate, London S.W.>.

A subscribers' list in Elijah Williams' < Horae Divanianae (1852)> gives <Cattley, H.G., Esq., 5, Clifton-place, Hyde Park>. That's located on the opposite side of Hyde Park.

Tabanus: He was educated at Trinity College Cambridge, and lived in 95 Mount st. (E of Hyde Park) in 1848, South Audley st. 29 Grosvenor Square (E of Hyde Park) in 1850, <5 Clifton place Sussex sq. Hyde Park> in 1856 (Post Office Directory p. 256), and in 23 Hyde-park-gate (SW of Hyde Park) in 1861, 1863, 1865 and 1871!

Tabanus: William Esdaile Cattley (1819–1888) was his brother. Sons of horti-culturist William Cattley (1788-1835) and Hannah nee Garrett (1794-1827). There's a family tree which has all this.

The brothers lived together also in 1856. In 1871 census Henry has no occupation (or field is blank), and I can't find him in 1861 census. 409 Park Lane in 1891, "Florist" (like his father).

The plant genus Cattleya, cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattl... is named after the father, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willi...

Tabanus: Henry apparently had no children. The probate calendar says

<Cattley Henry Griffin of 32 Hyde-park-gate Middlesex esquire died 16 January 1897 Probate London 5 March to Alexander Turner Cory, Romer Williams and Henry Ashworth James esquires Effects L37363 6s. Resworn October 1897 L36533 11s. 4d.>

Tabanus: <409 Park Lane in 1891, "Florist" (like his father).> Wrong, sorry.

Can't find him in 1881 and 1891 censuses. Post Office London Directory 1880 has him + brother William in 23 Hyde Park gate, Kensington.

Tabanus: William Esdaile Cattley moved to Scotland at some point and died there in 1888. His probate says one of the heirs was "Henry Griffin Cattley, 23 Hyde Park Gate, South, London, his brother." So he lived almost 40 years there, https://www.google.com/maps/place/2...

MissScarlett: His <DOB> is January 22nd 1821. See the <Morning Herald> of January 25th 1821, p.4. Place of birth is <Lamb's Conduit street> which matches the baptismal record of June 26th 1821 for St. George the Martyr's, Holborn.
