Feb-21-09 | | whiteshark: This is <not!> Richard Schulder (19.11.1858-24.1.1918) at least. Nevertheless:

Nov-03-15 | | Calli: According to Deutsche Schachtung (1849), Schulder waa about 24 years old. Therefore 1825 is a likely birth year. http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... |

 | | Tabanus: Is the first name "R."? Alien Arrivals has several Schulder, of which there is <Rudolph Schulder>, merchant, arriving 19 May 1850 to Dover from Germany. Then a Thekla Schulder is baptized 27 Feb 1853 in St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate, London: father is Rudolph Schulder and mother is Maria. Germany, Select Births and Baptisms has a Rudolph Schulder, b. 18 July 1823, baptized 31 July 1823 in Evangelisch, Solingen, Rheinland, Prussia. Father Friedrich Wilhelm Schulder and mother Johanna Helena Reichart. If that helps. Just a shot in the dark. |

 | | Tabanus: A Rudolph Schulder of Prussia, merchant, arriving to London also 22 Dec 1856. Port of Departure: Hamburg. |
|
Nov-04-15 | | Calli: <Tab> Rudolph Schulder, b. 18 July 1823 would seem to fit the 1849 description of a player "about" 24 years old. Perhaps we should search on an alt spelling like "Rudolf". |

 | | Tabanus: <Calli> Yes, but it looks difficult. The ancestry site has also indexed a Rudolph Schuller, merchant from Prussia, arriving 4 Feb 1849 to Dover. Looking at the original image, to me it looks like "Schoeller" (both in the book and the signature). Perhaps not the same man, but some englified their names, and Schulder may be such a case. Perhaps his real German name was Rudolf Schöller, who knows. |

 | | MissScarlett: In the <Field> of May 6th 1854, p.416, in the chess section of <Notices to Correspondents>, i.e. separate from the main chess column, but probably still penned by Boden, we find: <Mr. Horwitz has been a resident at Southampton now for some time. We don't know his address, but have no doubt he would be happy to play with you. Mr. Schulder, another excellent player, is also a member of the Southampton Club.> When the Boden game appeared in, I believe, the February 1853 issue of the <BCR>, no location or date was given, so <London, 1853> could, perhaps, be <Southampton, 1852>. |
