Jan-30-06  sneaky pete: Friedrich Wilhelm Von Mauvillon (1774-1851), probably the first postal player.
Jan-24-09  whiteshark: The earliest three correspondence games of which the full record survives were played in 1804 between two Dutch officers, <<Friedrich Wilhelm von Mauvillon> (1774–1851)> stationed in The Hague and another, name unknown, stationed in Breda. Mauvillon published the games in a book "Anweisung zur Erlernung des Schachspiels" (Essen 1827) on pages 373-5. He did not say who was White or Black but there may be a presumption that he was the winner of all the games? Neither was a strong player.

Position after the illegal queenside castling at Black's 19th in the second Mauvillon game. The following moves were apparently made by correrspondence.

(At this point, it appears that the players met one evening and concluded the game OTB without recording the moves. The sense seems to be that Mauvillon (actually the second player with the white pieces?) made many mistakes and stalemated his opponent: 'Als die Partie so weit gedichen war, kamen die Spieler zusammen, und endigten das Spiel an einen Abend, ohne weitrere Verzeichnung der Züge. M that mehrere Fehl-Züge, so, dass es G. gelang, die P zu schlagen, und remise zu machen, da er sonst augenscheinlich hatte verlieren müssen.') *
