John Niemann was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1905. A chemist by profession, John Niemann was also a correspondence chess player, but primarily known as one of the world's foremost collectors of helpmates. His collection included at least 65,000 compositions gathered from countless sources.

Niemann was himself also a chess problem composer, as well as an author of several books. His book of 1950, Echo im Hilfsmatt, is available online at http://problem64.beda.cz/silo/niema....
