Salomon Judowicz Szapiro/Saul Yudovich Schapiro, born and died Łódź, Poland.
Not to be confused with David Max Schapiro of Cologne.
Salomon Szapiro came in 4th at the <Siegergruppe I> of the Hamburg 1910 International Main tournament B, behind Barasz, Dr. Thoenes and Lowtzky. Szapiro was also prize winner in two Main tournaments of the Bavarian Chess Federation (shared 4th-5th in 1909, shared 2nd-3rd in 1911). (1)
Birthdate
On page 220 of A.J. Gillam's 'Mannheim 1914 and the Interned Russians' (Nottingham, 2014) reproduces a document regarding Szapiro's World War One internment stating that he was born in Lodz on Feb. 18, 1888 to Yehudah & Sarah (née Grunin).
Other sources give different birthdates:
The database 'Poland, Lódz Jewish Ghetto Register Books, 1939-1944' (USHMM) gives Szapiro being born Feb. 28, 1888.
The database 'Last Letters from the Łódź Ghetto' (USHMM) lists Szapiro being born Feb. 20, 1888.
Some sources give his birth year as 1882 but this may be due David Max Schapiro's results at Hanover 1902, Coburg 1904, and Barmen 1905, being wrongly attributed to Szapiro and giving him an earlier birth year to account for those results.
