Dec-27-13  thomastonk: Can someone verify the name of the black player? The chess player Harry Slater Wilson I know is a contemporary of Lewis and Evans and died in January 1851. Is this another H.S.W.?

Phony Benoni: <thomastonk> This player is <W S Wilson>, as is made clear by a couple of articles in the "Brooklyn Daily Eagle". I can't seem to link to the articles directly, but you can try this search page:

http://eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary....

Choose "Advanced Search", then use the search terms "chess Lasker Wilson" and the time period "1881-1902". There will be four entries of which two are relevant.

<May 14, 1901> describes a simul by Lasker on the previous evening at the New York Athletic Club. He won 14 games over the board and a blindfold game from <W S Wilson>.

<May 19, 1901> gives a further account of the simul, and the score of the game with "Chairman" Wilson, who was apparently a club official. It also makes clear that the game was played on <Monday>, which was February 13.

I know nothing else about Wilson at the moment, other than he was a subscriber to the Cambridgge Springs 1904 tournament bulletin. (ACB, 1904, p.31). He's not in Gaige.
