   Jul-23-25 D H Levin vs J Anthony, 1983 (replies)

James J. Henderson: I'm not sure the position after Black's 14th move makes a particularly good puzzle: after 15.Nf4 Rad8, it seems Black is still okay. But the position after 17...Bf8 [DIAGRAM] would make a nice puzzle! After 18.f3, the only way to save the knight on e4 is 18...Ng5 ...

   Jun-27-25 D Gukesh vs Carlsen, 2025 (replies)

James J. Henderson: Echoing part of what <Fusilli> said, in my opinion the definition of "blunder" has to involve more than a move that changes a theoretically drawn position into a theoretically losing position (or a win to a draw or loss). I think the definition must involve some ...

   Jun-25-25 I Smirnov vs A Ipatov, 2007

James J. Henderson: The pawn sacrifice on move 10 by the 14-year-old Ipatov is apparently not sound. To be fair, when the position occurred in Anand vs Kasparov, 1995 Kasparov's move 10...Ne5 wasn't the best either (Stockfish prefers 10...Rc8). Trading off the dark-square bishops with 14.Bh6

James J. Henderson: Someone should correct the verb tenses in her biography posted here.

   Jun-13-25 I Smirnov vs V Vetoshko, 2007 (replies)

James J. Henderson: If I'm reading correctly, Vetoshko was nine years old when this game was played.

   May-16-25 Zvjaginsev vs Topalov, 1995

James J. Henderson: After 48...Kh3, White can simply play 49.Bxf3 and win. But <Cecco> asked about 48...Kh3 49.Kf2 Rd2+ 50.Kxf3 Rxa2. [DIAGRAM] This R + B vs. R endgame is actually a tablebase win, mate in 40, apparently (using "!" to denote "only winning move"): 51.Bg4+ Kh2 52.Be6! ...

   May-14-25 D Gukesh vs B Deac, 2025

James J. Henderson: One further wrinkle: it seems 53.Qd2 was a mistake, but White got a respite with 54...Bf7. If, instead, Black plays 54...Bc4, [DIAGRAM] White is losing; the threats of Qf1+ and Ng4 are overwhelming.

   May-02-25 Duda vs C Aravindh, 2025

James J. Henderson: <offramp> And it was still available on move 27.

   Apr-19-25 L Labatt vs Capablanca, 1909 (replies)

James J. Henderson: <An Englishman: ... Capablanca used a standard stratagem vs. the Stonewall Attack--8...cxd4 and 9...Nb4 to harass the B...> Do you mean in this game or in general? Apart from Marshall vs Capablanca, 1911 , I don't know of further games where Capablanca faced the ...

   Mar-29-25 V Sanal vs S V Sargsyan, 2025

James J. Henderson: Quite an unfortunate 31st move.
