Aug-11-25 Gheorghiu vs Portisch, 1963 (replies)

Retired Patzer: Interesting that Gheorghiu went 2-0 vs Portisch in that event. Would have viewed him as the home dog.

   Aug-04-25 R Weston vs J Grant, 1994 (replies)

Retired Patzer: In Banzea-"Nilton 16" doesn't White have 34.Rg8+?

   Apr-26-25 Boris Savchenko

Retired Patzer: Notice that he hit his peak rating before he was 23, but is down about 200 points since then. Isn't he young enough to still be rising?

   Aug-17-24 M Mukhin vs M Podgaets, 1972 (replies)

Retired Patzer: I didn't follow the idea of Black's 29th either. Doesn't 29...Nf4 preserve both knights long enough to maybe get the queen onto the long diagonal? Although I suppose 30.Bxe5 wrecks that idea.

   Jun-11-24 A Savage vs S Djuric, 1983

Retired Patzer: Thanks for finding this game. I inquired about it a couple years ago on the Allan Savage page, and am glad to see it added to the database.

Jun-11-24 Spassky vs Fischer, 1972 (replies)

Retired Patzer: After 69.Rc3+ Kd4 it almost looks like White has winning chances with 70.Be7, aiming for f6 to help blockade the Black queenside pawns while retaining protection of his own g-pawn. But 70....Ke5 pretty much forces the bishop back to f8.

   Jun-11-24 V Iordachescu vs S Williams, 2013 (replies)

Retired Patzer: I went for 40 Re8+ as well.

   Oct-09-23 Miguel Quinteros

Retired Patzer: That looks like a great article. Any way to get an English translation of it?

Jun-23-23 Kotov vs Najdorf, 1953 (replies)

Retired Patzer: Thanks for the illustrations. Seems like 50 extra moves would be anticlimactic after Najdorf's clever combination should have ended it. But if Najdorf were unsettled enough to make a blunder, maybe it would be worth a try.

Apr-27-23 Euwe vs Najdorf, 1953 (replies)

Retired Patzer: Despite a low finish in this tournament, Dr. Euwe had two really great wins. See also Geller-Euwe.
