Mar-23-07 Shulman vs The World, 2007
|
SirBruce: Yes, I think people are certainly willing to listen to alternatives, if something strong is found, or if a line is busted. But I don't really know what you expect, Hugin; it's unlikely that any engine is going to recommend a move that's truly BAD, it just might not be the best 30 ... |

SirBruce: <1. Do you think that Sergei's record for the youngest GM ever will be broken any time in the near future? If so, who would be a likely canidate?> No.
<2. Who is your favourite chess prodigy (still active, younger than 25)> Levon Aronian!

Mar-19-07 Thomas Barnes

SirBruce: Barnes has the lowest winning percentage of just about all the great "masters" in the chessgames database. Both he and John Cochrane are below 40%. |

Mar-19-07 Ben De Cat
|
SirBruce: Ben De Cat's country is Belgium. He's mentioned a couple of times in the following page, but it's in Dutch. There are several pictures of the nato chess gathering; he may be in one of them: http://www.natochess.org/nlchess/ar... |

Mar-19-07 Old Benoni (A43)
|
SirBruce: Chess could actually be a win for black with best play, but that seems unlikely. Statistics tell us that white wins more than black, and as you go up in ELOs, GM play leads to more draws, but not more wins for black. It would be very odd if, as one played more and more of the ... |

Mar-19-07 T Barnes vs Morphy, 1858
|
SirBruce: Actually, Barnes went wrong with 13.Bxa8. I played a Barnes personality in Chessmaster today, where I had trimmed opening books where Barnes blundered. Instead of 13.Bxa8, Chessmaster came up with 13.Bg5, which equalized the position. After 13...Qxg5 14.Nxg5 Bxd1 15.Bxa8 Be2 ... |

Mar-19-07 Sicilian, Canal-Sokolsky (Rossolimo) Attack (B51)
|
SirBruce: 5.c4 does seem to be the move to make, but after that the opening appears to be very drawish, although I agree black's chances of winning might seem slim. And the Sicilian seems to be made for draws, so I'm more interested in better lines against it for white. |

Mar-18-07 Joshua Waitzkin
|
SirBruce: Maxx,
Doing some research on the web it certainly seems that at one time, FIDE norms expired but UCSF norms did not. But I can't find anything in the handbook. Maybe FIDE changed the rules recently regarding norms? |
