I'm just a duffer who enjoys the simple pleasures of chess, playing most of my games as "marno" via chessmaniac.com. Rated 1700+ there, but probably about 1400 in real life. I prefer to play 1 d4 as White, the French as Black, and still haven't settled on a happy answer to 1 d4, though I am presently using what some call a "Nimzo-Bogo Complex".

marn0: <wannabe<the Najdorf against e4, I would like to know more about your difficulties.>> It isn't the Najdorf in particular, it's the whole Sicilian thing. And it's nothing specific I can say about the Sicilian that troubles me, except to say that playing either side of it ...

marn0: Can someone who plays the KID tell me: what characterizes the main variations and at what point in the game do you know which one you are playing, whether Saemish, Classical, 4-pawn, etc.? And aren't the variations mainly determined by WHITE?

marn0: Hurrah for the KIA! I like to play the 1.e4 open games as White (especially the Vienna or Scotch). What I enjoy so much about the KIA is its facility versus the non-1...e5 replies (Sicilian, French, C-K). The KIA with the 1.e4 move order frees me from having to study the mainlines of

marn0: How about setting up the wing gambit first? Maybe Black's smile at 2.a3 will change when he sees 3.b4...?

marn0: <who: another way to get the scotch> Well I did not mean that I deliberately head for the Scotch Gambit from the start, but it is a variation among several that often develop when opening with 1.e4 e5 2.c4. I also like the Urusoff quite a bit, and the Evans... I'm just a gambit ...
