my interest in chess jumped up a couple years ago. it's a game i never played as a child, ignorantly dismissing it as dull. an ex-girlfriend cajoled me into playing one night, and when she beat me, i didn't even see the mate coming.i decided there must be more to this game than i gave it credit for, and so i went to the library, came across chernev's book on the best players ever, became enchanted with capablanca's gorgeous and seemingly imperturbable chessboard grace.
a few months later, after forgetting about the foray into capa's games, i read a wonderful feminist manifesto of sorts called c**t. in it the author recommends chess to everyone, and recommends the movie "fresh" as well.
for whatever reason this got me psyched for chess again, and i found chessgames.com. brilliant, brilliant site. i check out every game of the day. it's taught me a lot.
through chessgames, i got into tal, who is my favorite player.
i am a total patzer, i seldom play. someday i'm sure i'll play more. but i'm fascinated by the game, and by the beauty that is possible on the chessboard.
peace,
k
