my interest in chess jumped up a couple years ago. it's a game i never played as a child, ignorantly dismissing it as dull. an ex-girlfriend cajoled me into playing one night, and when she beat me, i didn't even see the mate coming.

i decided there must be more to this game than i gave it credit for, and so i went to the library, came across chernev's book on the best players ever, became enchanted with capablanca's gorgeous and seemingly imperturbable chessboard grace.

a few months later, after forgetting about the foray into capa's games, i read a wonderful feminist manifesto of sorts called c**t. in it the author recommends chess to everyone, and recommends the movie "fresh" as well.

for whatever reason this got me psyched for chess again, and i found chessgames.com. brilliant, brilliant site. i check out every game of the day. it's taught me a lot.

through chessgames, i got into tal, who is my favorite player.

i am a total patzer, i seldom play. someday i'm sure i'll play more. but i'm fascinated by the game, and by the beauty that is possible on the chessboard.

peace,
k

   Mar-17-10 Benko vs S Mariotti, 1982

spock jenkins: i was checking out 1.b3 games, and this one seems interesting enough. i haven't run it through an engine or anything, but it looks like mariotti sacs a knight with 16..Nd4 and benko counter-sacs with 19.Rc4. after that, it looks like benko outplays his opponent in the ...

spock jenkins: natalia, i realize this isn't quite over yet (as i'm typing this anyway) -- but where do you think jakovenko went wrong?

spock jenkins: this is a pleasing endgame from tal. look how he activates his king, and how he just lets the white g-pawn pass, using the tempi to push his streamroller forward...

   Nov-15-07 Bogoljubov vs E Diemer, 1952 (replies)

spock jenkins: it really does look like a draw. i let herr fritz spin his wheels for 15 minutes and i was seeing =0.00. maybe a long term plan is outside its horizon? i agree with runemaster - looks like a loss on time.

Jul-11-07 Capablanca vs Reti, 1924 (replies)

spock jenkins: ok, i see. 36...Re8 37.Kf5 and white wins black's d-pawn in the exchanges. so his d-pawn is a passed pawn and his king will be deep in black's territory while black's king is out of play and far from his pawns. a won endgame for white. some may say it's obvious, but i think ...

spock jenkins: hi folks! i was looking at some KID 4 pawns attack games, and came across this one, which i think is quite fun: Bogoljubov vs G A Thomas, 1923 later!

spock jenkins: what a cool game! i think it could be a GOTD. in addition to 22 Rxh5, i also liked 32 d6. the knight on d5 was quite strong.

spock jenkins: since we're on the polish, i'm dying to know if others here find this game interesting: K Volke vs M Schaefer, 1994

spock jenkins: Nd3 looks interesting to me! It seems like it cramps white's position and keeps the initiative. An aside: Judging by your quote, and your handle, you'll get this reference: Lack of vision makes division product no ambition.
