AlanWilkinson: <chessmoron>The simple R sacrifice forces mate after Qh3+, Qxe6+, Rh2++

AlanWilkinson: Ari Nijman was an amazing character. He smoked like a chimney but often wound up smoking his matchstick instead when he was getting excited during a five-minute game. He used to play Alvin Hollander half the night "for money". But it was all double or quits so Ari would win a ...

AlanWilkinson: Vernon Small was a younger recruit to our Canterbury student group and became a top player. For a while he wrote a chess column too. Now he is a political reporter in Wellington I think.

AlanWilkinson: I think the book was self-published. It is undated and has no publication or printing info at all on it. I bought my copy directly from Ortvin when I met him once at an Auckland tournament I visited. You would need to get copyright authorisation from his estate to republish I ...

   Feb-20-07 O Sarapu vs A L Wilkinson, 1967

AlanWilkinson: Yes, this was a hectic year for me and I was well over-stretched. It was my final Honours year at university and I was Secretary of the Canterbury Chess Club organising this huge Centennial Tournament at the same time. This game has a gruesome ending!

   Feb-20-07 A L Wilkinson vs O Sarapu, 1966

AlanWilkinson: I would like to agree with Ortvin! He outplayed me into a winning endgame here.

AlanWilkinson: Yes, I was from Christchurch. My brother-in-law is Michael Taylor - no relation I think - who was NZ Schoolboy Champion in about 1961 I think. I was joint Champion with Glenn Turner in 1963. Glenn and Roly Metge were the Auckland players at that tournament. Another strong ...

AlanWilkinson: An incredible cricket win by the Kiwis last night to whitewash the Aussies 3-0. Another little story I recall from our Canterbury Chess Club Centennial Tournament in 1966 which we ran and hosted Yuri Averbach and a number of IMs from around the world. A bunch of hard-case ...

   Feb-20-07 Bruce R Anderson (replies)

AlanWilkinson: Bruce was also a NZ Schoolboy champion and a stalwart of the Canterbury Chess Club in Christchurch. We were good buddies as students but I haven't seen him for many years. He was a very strong player both tactically and strategically. He later took up Contract Bridge and was ...

   Feb-20-07 Ortvin Sarapu (replies)

AlanWilkinson: Nice to see old Ortvin getting the recognition he deserves. As a student I played him several times but always lost. My good student buddy at the Canterbury Chess Club, Bruce Anderson, also played him and at least took some draws from him. My favourite memory was after Ortvin ...
