   Dec-03-15 Spassky vs S Avtonomov, 1949 (replies)

Balmo: Probably someone's already pointed this out but "qualifyers"?? Qualifiers! As to the puzzle, I also spent a whole looking for a way for black to decline the rook, especially the passive Qe8 which is tough to crack immediately. But white has a glorious position and should win easily ...

   Nov-19-15 Adams vs O Renet, 1992 (replies)

Balmo: I just can't see what's wrong with 10...Qxb2. Does anyone fancy helping me out? Thanks!

Oct-02-15 Gelfand vs Kramnik, 1996 (replies)

Balmo: For a moment I thought white had a miracle save available with 28. Qf8+, but alas! Black can recapture with the rook and white doesn't have time to take the free queen... Great game from Kramnik.

   Sep-19-14 J Votava vs A Zatonskih, 2004 (replies)

Balmo: Ah I see now that Black still had a little bit of work to do after winning back the queen. Also in my previous post I wrote Qxe3 instead of Qxd3.

   Aug-18-14 M Schulz vs T Struening, 2004 (replies)

Balmo: It's funny and a little bit sad how well everyone knows the openings these days. If I didn't know better, I'd say the first 8-10 moves of this game were played by a couple of GMs, or certainly experienced players. Then, around moves 11-12 or thereabouts, things suddenly start to get a

   Aug-13-14 Judit Polgar (replies)

Balmo: The great Judit Polgar, retiring after 25 years at the top! An incredible, glittering career. Her aggressive-tactical style was a joy to watch. Her demolition of Mamedyarov in the Ruy Lopez a few years back was a fond memory, but of course her treatment of the Sicilian with White was ...

   Jul-24-14 Vugar Gashimov (replies)

Balmo: The great Gashimov. One of my very favourite players, and a terrible loss to the chess world at just 27. If you haven't seen it, watch him outplay Azarov in the 2011 World Cup in Khanty Mansisk, the game must be somewhere here. Grande Gashimov!

   Jun-27-14 L Christiansen vs J Campos Moreno, 1980 (replies)

Balmo: All hail Larry Christiansen, King of the cheapos! Great tactical player.

Jun-16-14 World Rapid Championship (2014) (replies)

Balmo: This is the link I'm watching, it's pretty good. The commentator is obviously not English, but he has extremely strong chess ideas - he was guessing all of Carlsen's moves in his draw with Guseinev just now. http://dubai2014wrb.com/

   Jun-10-14 Gyula Sax (replies)

Balmo: Actually - if I can just amend that PGN, I believe the final moves were 37...Ng4 38. g3 and black resigned.
