   Jan-22-19 T Sawyer vs K Bateman, 2018 (replies)

EboLedder: At first I agreed with the sentiment about the substandard game--it seemed a clear case of white overreaching and getting punished for it. But the heavy trading and brash play of white, and black's patient rebuffs and cunning in nursing the advantage, did make for a pretty ...

   Jan-24-17 M Ruderfer vs Stein, 1972 (replies)

EboLedder: Is there a Monday puzzle here at 20: white to move? Or is the position too complex for a Monday?

   Oct-20-16 D Bocharov vs A Mokshanov, 2015 (replies)

EboLedder: There is a mid- to late-week puzzle here starting at 33. white to move. The gambit beginning 33. Ra1 is a real showstopper.

   Sep-16-16 H Bouwmeester vs H Heinicke, 1951 (replies)

EboLedder: What an ignominious end for black. It's hard to know what was in Heinicke's mind when he blundered 35 . . . Bc6 rather than just resigning.

   Oct-16-13 A I Zakharov vs A Bannik, 1963 (replies)

EboLedder: It seems clear to me that the only decisive gain of material comes from 25. g4.

Mar-19-10 Carlsen vs Smeets, 2010 (replies)

EboLedder: I am admittedly a newcomer, but I don't see how 33 ... Rd7 is a forced move.

   Sep-18-08 C Lip vs N Mills, 2001 (replies)

EboLedder: Agreed that 20 . . . Rf8 left me scratching my head the first time I saw it, and upon review just leaves me aghast. Maybe those who see six moves out noticed an earlier, worse move, but from where I'm sitting that was the game-loser. Why hang that a pawn?!

   Apr-23-08 S Andriasyan vs H Dronavalli, 2006 (replies)

EboLedder: I saw 17. ... Rxg2+, but having missed the royal knight fork, after 18. Kh1 I would have taken the e4 bishop and lost my queen. For every step forward, two steps back.

   Apr-30-07 J Emms vs A Blees, 1996 (replies)

EboLedder: What I find particularly instructive about this puzzle is the way black's g7 pawn, coupled with the well-placed white bishop, traps the king. That position can easily be extrapolated to many different OTB scenarios.

   Mar-26-07 K Papas vs E Krasenkowa, 2001 (replies)

EboLedder: It's true, as a lot of people have said, that Monday puzzles are simple. Maybe too simple. But the value of simplicity is subtle, and we ignore it at our peril. I spent several minutes tangled up in 33 Rxb7, and it appears that a lot of other people did, too. Our mistake was ...
