Originally from Rochester NY, my parents were Cold War immigrants from Eastern Europe. Since it is so big in that part of the world, I learned Chess at an early age.

I am interested in the idiosynchracies of Chess, and disdain the movement to reduce it to formulas and algorithms. I study rare openings and their peculiar names; I have assembled and curated a few collections that cover the most notable lines.

Game Collection: Unorthodox Games; Unusual Names (ECO=B,C)

Game Collection: Unorthodox Games; Unusual Names (ECO=A,D,E)

Game Collection: Unorthodox Games; Unusual Names (Overflow)

Well, there's also the puns. I try not to take things too seriously. It is just a game.

   Jul-31-25 J Filipovic vs T Ljikar, 2009

GumboGambit: This Croatian Contest is currently the only case of the curious <Kitchener Folly> in the DB. Black is too quick to castle, thereby dropping a pawn, and never recovering.

Jun-18-25 United States Championship (Women) (1978) (replies)

GumboGambit: Hmm, Didn’t know that the US Women’s Championship was being held in my hometown. Right around the time I found out the horsey thing was called a <Knight>. This event was held at Nazareth College, a few years before a scrappy point guard named Jeff Van Gundy joined the ...

   Jun-16-25 N Rashkovsky vs Z Sturua, 1982 (replies)

GumboGambit: This game features the debut of the <Rashkovsky Attack> by its namesake. Statistically, after 7.♕a4+, Black has more wins than White. So we could say that the Attack was Rash.

   Jun-16-25 I Polovodin vs S Makarichev, 1983

GumboGambit: With 7.e4, this is the debut of the <Polodovin Gambit>

   Jun-14-25 So vs T L Petrosian, 2019

GumboGambit: There were some Armenian rumors that So was looking down a lot during this game.

   Jun-14-25 T L Petrosian vs Niemann, 2021

GumboGambit: This is currently the only game in the Database featuring these two future members of the Chess.com Hall of Fame. Tigran triggered a winning attack with 19.♗xh6 to get the win in this game. Hopefully, fate will not cheat Niemann out of a chance at revenge.

   Jun-14-25 Steinitz vs W Evill, 1874

GumboGambit: Black has the advantage in the final position, but accepted a draw against the world’s top player at the time. At the end of the Exhibition, Steinitz likely wished he wouldn’t see, hear, nor speak of Evill for quite a while. Since this was a Simultaneous Exhibition, Steinitz

   Jun-14-25 F Hamond vs W Evill, 1916

GumboGambit: Black’s defense was starting to slip, and the Queen Sac granted Hamond <The Access of Evill>

   Jun-14-25 S Angas vs P Humble, 1850

GumboGambit: <Let’s Get Ready to Humble>

   Jun-14-25 B Wall vs Brandon, 1980

GumboGambit: Let’s Go Bran. . . .uh, nevermind.
