Peter Reeve: Dear Santa, I hope global warming hasn't made you homeless yet. Can I interest you in some elf insurance?

Dec-22-06 The World vs A Nickel, 2006 (replies)

Peter Reeve: It seems to be generally agreed that 37...Qe8 is forced, everything else leading to a swift forced mate. Please bear with me (I have no engine or even a board, and little time) but how does 37...Kh7 lead to a quick forced mate? That would be my move.

Peter Reeve: Raymond Keene analyses this game in today's Spectator. See www.spectator.co.uk . Keene suggests that this line for white, which went out of fashion, deserves further study.

Peter Reeve: Ray, That's a sneaky, SNEAKY puzzle of yours in this week's Spectator! I advise anyone trying to solve it to do so before reading the text that precedes it. Go straight to the puzzle and try your luck.

   Jun-10-06 Adams vs E Ghaem Maghami, 2006

Peter Reeve: Nigel Short annotated this game in The Guardian. I reproduce it here - showing just the moves with comments -entirely without permission. 12.a3 Ne4 (A time-consuming way of reducing the tension through exchanges) 15.a4 Qg6 (Intending Bxh3) 18.Qd2 Rxe1+ (An unnecessary ...

   May-17-06 Y Kruppa vs S Ovsejevitsch, 1993 (replies)

Peter Reeve: Epic game, with impressive endgame strategy! Some bizarre knight moves in the opening, too. I don't understand why 24.…Kf7 and I don't understand why not 35.…Rg7 And I must admit that after about move 50 I thought black had a winning position on account of the a pawn. But ...

Apr-25-06 Muller vs Bayer, 1908 (replies)

Peter Reeve: OK Capa, you've convinced me on that. Now what about 13...Be6 14.Qh4 BxB ?

   Apr-18-06 E Diemer vs Heinz, 1954 (replies)

Peter Reeve: The point is 21. Qxc6 To avert mate, black has to lose another piece.

   Mar-11-06 Spassky vs A Ostl, 1990 (replies)

Peter Reeve: White responds to 19. ...bxc3 with 20.Qxc3+ which wins the bishop next move and leaves white a pawn up and black with a pressured king.

Mar-04-06 Radjabov vs Leko, 2006 (replies)

Peter Reeve: 41.g4 seems obvious. Advancing the king and his attendent pawns could yet force a win for white
