Boring, middle-aged, Midwestern white guy who enjoys folkdancing, baseball, poetry & chess in that order. Favorite players: Capo, Fischer, Morphy & Lasker -- in that order. Apex of my chess career was playing Sammy Reshevsky to a draw (one of 2 draws out of 28 matches) when he came to Carleton College in 1965.

   Oct-05-21 Capablanca vs A Dolci, 1913 (replies)

Robespierre: I suspect that the pun references the similarity between the names 'Dolci' and 'Dolce', and the words Cubana (a reference to Capa) and Gabbana. As puns go this is definitely NOT the worst that I've ever encountered (& over the course of the years I've read puns in English, ...

   Jun-12-21 M Tan vs M Ulybin, 2008 (replies)

Robespierre: To Mephisto: Everyone rejoices when a lamb returns to the fold! [Please pardon my Scriptural reference!]

   Mar-14-21 Morphy vs J Carr, 1858 (replies)

Robespierre: Kudos to Herr J J Lowenthal who has, lo, those many years ago, masterfully annotated several of Morphy's games with with wit & insight!

Nov-30-20 Hort vs Polgar, 1987 (replies)

Robespierre: Kudos to Honza Cervenka for suggesting this as the Game of the Day -- grazie, grazie!

   Aug-14-20 S Shipov vs V L Ivanov, 1995 (replies)

Robespierre: Great sentiment for the subtitle! I remember my uncles who'd been in WW II repeating the expression, "Shape up or ship out!"

   Mar-31-17 Mamedyarov vs A Timofeev, 2004 (replies)

Robespierre: When I arrived at move 34 my instinct was 34. Re h3 .... forcing 34 ... QxR followed by 35. gh3 This results in an endgame of R+5 pawns vs B+6 pawns which should be winnable by White. Anyone else end up with this analysis?

   Mar-28-17 Spassky vs M Bieler, 2009 (replies)

Robespierre: Thank you, Marcel Bieler, for providing this wonderful historical info -- extremely entertaining!

   May-26-16 G Szilagyi vs Robatsch, 1966 (replies)

Robespierre: As an "advanced beginner" I believe that I've gotten 2 or 3 Weds puzzles in the past 4-5 years. This was the 3d or 4th puzzle I've solved in under 3 minutes. I'm either improving or this Weds puzzle was easier than most Weds puzzles.

   Apr-04-16 F Garcia Lechugo vs L Elamri, 2004 (replies)

Robespierre: When I get the daily puzzle in less than 30 seconds one knows that it's likely the first or 2d day of the week!

   Jan-19-16 Euwe vs E Spencer, 1924 (replies)

Robespierre: May I assume that the pun refers to the 'Marks & Spencer' retail chain in the UK?
