alogo: It seems to me that 14. ... ♗e6 15. ♘g5+ ♔g8 16. ♘xe6 ♘a5! 17. ♘xd8+ ♘xb3 is indeed a better defense. White regains the sacrificed piece, but not more. Who finds a better line?

   Jan-12-05 A J Mackenzie vs F Hollins, 1893 (replies)

alogo: As <Honza Cervenka> pointed out, George Henry Mackenzie died in 1891. He was a strong American player. The game was played in 1893 in London. White played rather weakly. So I assume that White was a different MacKenzie. The final position is beautiful.

alogo: I think 24. ... f5 was a defense worth considering, e.g. 25. Rh8+ Kxg7 26. Rxa8 fxe4 with at least some counter-play. Or does anyone find a line which wins more than the exchange?

alogo: Well, this one is even more fun than the famous miniature in the Dutch, Edward Lasker vs G A Thomas, 1911 since here Black finishes with such great a silent move. *** THANKS A LOT *** for finding it to chessgames.com

   Dec-13-04 A R Andersen vs A Gronnestad, 2003 (replies)

alogo: OK, the Check is the first thing to look at and the rest is pretty obvious. But I first didn't get the point of Black's piece sac, even if Ne7+ wouldn't work. Then I saw Black to move would win with ... ... Qxc1+ and mate. But White could of course trade queens if the mate ...

   Dec-11-04 D Barua vs Gulko, 1993 (replies)

alogo: Queen and Knight. I must admit that I didn't even consider the sac of the bishop, since Q+N is the most dangerous attacking combination.

   Dec-03-04 L Rama vs H K Simonsen, 2004

alogo: Incredible. Instead of 32.Qg3, white wins immediately with 32.Rd8+ Kg7 33.Rg8+ Kh6 34.Qh3 mate.

   Nov-09-04 Y Aronov vs S Bouaziz, 2001

alogo: the result cannot be true since the final position is a dead draw!?

Nov-02-04 Shirov vs Karpov, 2003 (replies)

alogo: Agreed, the position after 20.Qf4 is lost already. 20. ... g6? 21.Bxf6 refutes a proposition above; 20. ... h6 21. Bxf6 Bxf6 22.d5 Bxc3 23.dxe6 Bxe1 24.exf7+ Kh8 25. fxe8Q+ Rxe8 26.Rxe1 wins a piece. After 20. ... Nd5 21. Nxd5 Rxd5 (instead of Bxd5) 22.Be4 wins the exchange ...
