Apr-22-05 Tal vs Suetin, 1969 (replies)

egsmith: <rishi> I liked Bf5+ as a response to Kd8 as well however I think it is important to play Bg5+ before taking the knight to prevent the black king from escaping, albiet with heavy looses, through e7. This was my line 21... Kd8 22. Bf5+ Nd5 23. Bg5+ [king is now trapped so ...

   Mar-25-05 Kasparov vs F A Cuijpers, 1980 (replies)

egsmith: <thesonicvision> I had the same question about 17...Rxf5. I put the position into crafty and basically, in crafty's opinion, Rxf5 will end up with a trade of a rook for a knight or bishop. After the trade a large melee takes place and white has a slight advantage (~0.3 pawn) ...

   Sep-29-04 A J Fink vs Alekhine, 1932 (replies)

egsmith: <EyesofBlue> It does not work as easily as I had hoped. After 15. ... Bf5 the queen can retreat to d1 (or d2). The attack is strong but not yet decisive. Bb5 is the superior move so I guess I got this one wrong. Of course, a queen for a bishop does not gaurentee a win either ...

egsmith: <Whitehat1963> 11. Qh4 Rh8, Black protects the checkmating sqaure (h7) and white is forced to move the queen again. Note, 12. Qh4 is ok after 11. Qd7 because Rh8 is no longer supported.

Sep-10-04 Krasenkow vs Adianto, 1998 (replies)

egsmith: I was going through the game and was initially confused by 16 ... Bd6. Why give up the g7 pawn when black just went through all the trouble of trying to protect it? I think this is the right conclusion. If 17 Qxg7 then Be5 and white has to leave g7, the queen doesn't get access to ...

Aug-10-04 de Riviere vs H Baucher, 1859 (replies)

egsmith: I believe 38 ... a5 would have also won for black. It brings another piece into the attack and prevents the rooks from working together. 38 ... a5 39. Rc1 Qxa2 40. Rh5 (it's hard to find a good plan for white) Qb2+ 41. Kd3 Qxb3+ 42. Rc3 Qd1+ and it's over.
