kahn: You can't say it was a shot out of nowhere because:
19.Qa5 threatened the knight check
20.Re1 threatened the knight check again due to the pin on the e6 pawn.
If Karpov went for the cheap 19...Qe5 threatening Bxf2+, then 20.Nc4 would lead to Qc7+ and goodbye b7 pawn. |
