I'm 30, relatively newly married with no kids. I live in Roanoke, VA during the school year and Charlottesville, VA during the summers. I teach math at Hollins University, so, naturally, my favorite chess player is Max Euwe.

I played a lot of tournaments in elementary and middle school, but then got busy doing other things and drifted away from the game until about a year ago.

msmith5: I think Black would have been wiser to exchange dark squared bishops on move 6, castle, and finish his development. Making 3 queenside flank moves when your king is still in the center and only two pieces have moved off the back rank doesn't make sense, and invites trouble.

   Aug-02-12 J Polgar vs N Gaprindashvili, 1990 (replies)

msmith5: 31. ... Rc3 wins (at least) a piece. The rook is immume from capture, as 32. bxc3 Bxc6+ 33. Kg1 Rg8+ 34. Kf2 Rg2+ But after 31. ... Rc3, white has no way to flee the queen and sufficiently defend the bishop. This ...

   Jun-07-12 M Beinoras vs H Salo, 2009 (replies)

msmith5: I worked it to the point of 25. Bxf7 26. Qxg6+ 27. Nxh6 28. Qxh6+ At this point, white has recovered his material (3 pawns for the minor piece), so loosening up the Black King is the frosting, making white better than when he started. I didn't work it out to the forced ...

   Jan-27-11 A Sherzer vs P Acs, 1998 (replies)

msmith5: I saw Re1+ because I didn't see a satisfactory way for black to otherwise prevent the mating attack, so I had to look for a forcing move. I didn't see Rh1+ after that, but should have since the key is that the queen has to be captured with check.

   Jan-26-11 S Mulligan vs D Foord, 2007 (replies)

msmith5: I saw it up to Bh4+ but didn't see the last two moves to finish white off so I thought it was a spoiler.

Jan-25-11 Klovans vs Timoshenko, 2000 (replies)

msmith5: I think Rf3 wins at least a piece for black, but I did not see a forced mate. The queen can't simulatenously defend itself, protect the bishop at f1, protect the rook, and protect the mate threat at h2. 46. ... Rf3 47. Qe2 Rxf1+ 48. Kg2 Qxd4 49. Qxd1 Up a piece for a pawn, ...

Jan-15-11 Gipslis vs Tal, 1955 (replies)

msmith5: I didn't get it. I thought black was trying to draw, so I tried: 47. ... h2+ A) 48 Kf1 h1=Q mate B) 48 Kh1 e2 Black threatens e1=Q mate. The only move I can see for white is: 49. Rc1 My two tries were 49. ... Rxb3 49. ... Rd2 But I could not get past 50. c6 as response ...

msmith5: It wasn't Petrosian who slipped his finger, but this was a game in the Bogo-Indian defence. L Palau vs S Kalabar, 1927

msmith5: <kingfu> When he was white, we started d4 Nf6 Nc3 e6 Bg5 When I was white, we started e4 d5 exd5 Qxd5 Nc3 Qd6 His strategy is to keep the pressure on until his opponent cracks. When I realized that he had threatened a discovery which would either win a minor ...

   Jun-23-10 A Budnikov vs V Varavin, 1989 (replies)

msmith5: Cute solution. White wants to move his rook to the 6th rank, sacking the rook to be able to queen the pawn. But if he does so immediately, Black just takes the pawn. Time for the zwischenzug 52. g6, which threatens gxf7, making a second dangerous passed pawn. Black can't capture ...
