I live in Delaware City De. I learned how to play chess from my room mate and friends while attending Saint Louis University in Saint Louis Mo.After college I spent two years in the army with a deployment to Bamberg Germany. When I was there I was told about the cafe that was popular with chess players. When I visited the cafe I noticed that there were many tables with chess boards and players willing to play chess with me.Then I learned I had found the home of the Bamberg Chess Club. Everyone was very pleasant and I enjoyed playing chess with the members and other people who stopped in.One night I played the best game of my life, trapping the black queen. When I won my opponent said"Don't play me,play him" pointing to a tall man with glasses. After I lost two games quickly commiting blunders a friend of his told me,"You must play carefully. This is a uniqe opportunity for you. This is Lothar Schmid the German Grand Master." I was new to chess and had not heard of him before but I knew what grandmaster was. I couldn't beat him in a million years.Yet I continued on for several games still making mistakes. He had a lot of patience. Since leaving the army I have played little chess and would like to resume. |
