solochess: Well, not really Sanskrit. Chathurangam is the Tamil word for chess. The more common word is "shatranj" which is chess in Hindi, possibly also in Urdu.

   Mar-01-04 Tal vs J Broderman, 1963 (replies)

solochess: This was the game chosen by Bruce Pandolfini for one for his Solitaire Chess columns. (Jan 2004, I think) I don't think Broderman defended all that well, but Tal is merciless in how he cleans up, even after grabbing Broderman's queen.

   Dec-15-03 E Poliviou vs P Makkas, 2001 (replies)

solochess: The 4.c4 is a relatively rare variation of the Advanced Caro. In keeping with the advancing theme, White just keeps grabbing space with his pawns. Surely black should have exchanged off a few pawns. 28.Nxd5 is a neat tactic that white builds up to.

   Dec-03-03 Tartakower vs V Buerger, 1932 (replies)

solochess: Interesting game. Black has the initiative almost all through, and to my patzer eyes, it looked as if Black was winning. Even 27 ...Rxe5 seemed like an exciting exch. sac. But 31 ...Rxg2+ is what some would call a pure desperation sac. Tartakower won! Hope some of the experts will

Nov-29-03 Nunn vs Adams, 1992 (replies)

solochess: I just stumbled upon this game. What a wonderful lesson in endgame. Basically, all the pieces are gone by move 39. Check out out how Mickey grinds out the win. They play it out till the very end (K+R vs K+P) and it was very illustrative to me.

Aug-25-03 Kasparov - Ponomariov World Championship Match (2003) (replies)

solochess: So, what is the lifetime game record for Kasparov-Ponomariov? Does anyone here know?
