Mar-11-09 | | brankat: Happy Birthday Elena! |
Mar-11-10 | | wordfunph: Soviet WGM Elena Akhmilovskaya eloped with American IM John Donaldson, team captain of US team, while playing in the 1988 Thessaloniki Chess Olympiad in Greece. They were married at the US Consulate in Greece. She returned to the Soviet Union almost a year later to get her 7 year-old daughter. She later divorced John Donaldson and married International Master Georgi Orlov. colorful lovelife, happy birthday Elena Donaldson! |

 | | HeMateMe: I think GM Joel Benjamin described that in "American Grandmaster." Not sure if Donaldson was playing, or was the coach, but he took off in a big hurry with his new bride, before the Olympiad was finished. She used to work for Yasser seriwan's chess magazine, writing, and i think they also sponsored some sort of chess cruise, where you go on a boat somewhere, and get chess lessons with pros, and play touraments, while on your way to go whale watching, or whatever. It was kind of funny, the ads for the cruise--they would show Elena with this sort of low cut top, satin blouse, lots of makeup, and the caption said "Elena Will Be There!" It was the time of that whole cheesy "mail order bride" era. |

Nov-19-12 | | Abdooss: <http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/201...> Susan Polgar reported of her demise in the above-mentioned post in her blog today. RIP WGM Elena! |
Nov-19-12
 | | ketchuplover: RIP ASAP |
Nov-19-12 | | Eastfrisian: Sad, to read that. She was to young. R.I.P. |
Nov-19-12
 | | Stonehenge: Too young indeed :(
RIP |
Nov-19-12 | | brankat: Very sad indeed. R.I.P. GM Akhmilovskaya. |
Nov-20-12 | | vector: She and her husband, IM Georgi Orlov, have been a major influence on the Seattle chess scene for many years, especially children. She will be missed. |
Nov-20-12 | | Old King Cole: She ran a Sunday column in the Seattle Times, Chess Studio, with a good variety of games, problems. |
Nov-20-12 | | Prugno: Very sorry to hear about this, perhaps her illness explains why she had stopped playing in recent years.
I hope something is done to remember her at the ongoing Women's World Championship. |
Nov-20-12 | | TheFocus: Saddened to hear about this.
R.I.P. Elena. |
Nov-21-12 | | Abdel Irada: Good heavens. I didn't learn until now that Elena had died; I didn't even know she was sick. It's hard to believe it's been 24 years since she was all over the cover of _Chess Life_ after eloping with John Donaldson and defecting. I remember her — a pretty, young woman with a vivacious smile — from that cover as if it were in last month's issue. In pace requiescat. |
Nov-21-12 | | Shams: Poor Georgi, and terrible news for chess in Washington State. |
Nov-21-12 | | Calli: The NYT obituary reports her name as Elena Akhmilovskaya Donaldson. Anyone know for sure? |
Nov-21-12
 | | WannaBe: you (actually) trust the NYT?! =)) |
Nov-22-12 | | Old King Cole: The problems in Elena's Chess Studio column (Seattle Times, 1990s), usually White to Play and Win or Draw, were some of the most vexing I have ever seen. I do not know their origin, and they seemed from other than classic ilk. (They were the kind which were very hard, then the solution showed a lot of simplicity, and you kickrf yourself for not knowing all along.) |
Nov-22-12 | | Shams: <Old King Cole> I'm pretty sure that was a NY Times feature that the Seattle Times just ran in syndication. Didn't she usually have one easy and one more difficult puzzle? It did irk me that in her column she called herself "U.S. Women's Champion Elena Donaldson" for years after she no longer held the title. But, that's just marketing, probably not her choice anyway. |
Dec-07-12 | | vinidivici: RIP Akh!! |
Dec-07-12 | | Abdel Irada: <WannaBe: you (actually) trust the NYT?! =)) > That emoticon is very nearly a perfect ASCII icon of your avatar, but I think it should be this: =)( |
Dec-07-12 | | The Last Straw: Sad to hear this. R.I.P |
Nov-04-19 | | Granny O Doul: <The NYT obituary reports her name as Elena Akhmilovskaya Donaldson. Anyone know for sure?> I don't know what her official chess name was, but certainly that order is more logical than the one here. |
Dec-20-20
 | | Stonehenge: Apparently her daughter died in 2014:
