John's final club game last month completed his victory in the 2016 Otago Chess Club Championship, winning the title for the tenth time.   Richard Taylor: I never met John Sutherland. Was he from Dunedin?

Sad to hear he died at 48. That's fairly young. Did he play in the NI in any tournaments?

  Richard Taylor: I recall Bruce Marsick, his first opponent on here. I knew him a bit and when I got back into chess in 1978 he was on the same train heading to the 1978/79 Congress as me. He was a character for sure...

  sackman: Richard Taylor, yes John was from Dunedin and a club stalwart for many years as well as regularly being club champion. He played in SI champs and NZ Champs on occasion in Wellington at least.
