ZAPPA (COMPUTER)
United States of America

[what is this?]

Zappa won the 13th ICGA World Computer Chess Championship in 2005 and was declared winner of the 15th World Computer Chess Championship (2007) by the ICGA after the original champion, Rybka (Computer), was disqualified. Zappa Mexico defeated Rybka 5.5-4.5 (+3 -2 =5) in the Clash of the Computer Titans (2007), a match between the two strongest chess programs of the time.

Zappa was written by UIUC graduate student Anthony Cozzie, who stopped working on the project in 2008. Zach Wegner started developing a Zappa-based program named Rondo in 2010, having acquired the relevant rights from Cozzie. ZAP! Chess (Computer) is a commercial version of Zappa.

Oct-30-05  csmath: Fruit is now superior to Shredder 9 and to Fritz 9. And no other engine comes even close. Zappa is still unknown since nobody was able to test it independently from the author.
Oct-30-05  you vs yourself: <csmath> Why wasn't 21...Rc8 played? Maybe after Bd3, you could've moved your knight to c5 or b6 if Bc4. And I thought you had a chance to move your rook to c8 earlier too.

Good game. I wonder why you didn't try Qa5+ and then Qxa6 in the final position instead of e4.

Oct-31-05  csmath: 21. ... Rc8 is possible.

22. Bc4

Now I don't think you can make Nb6 or Nc5 since after Nxe5 I am losing a crucial defence of g7 and I would be pretty much lost. I have to keep knight to go on e5 if the bishop is taken. But

22. ... a5

works fine.

Anyway, I wasn't losing the game at this point, I lost it after the stupid plan in 41st move. After that everything's gone down.

I might need to start playing Petroff. :-)

BishopBerkeley: <Chessgames.com> I'm glad you've all come through the storms intact!

I wonder if the Zappa games from the 2005 World Computer Championship are likely to be added any time soon? I submitted them on Sep 27.

I suspect you do have quite a backlog of games to work through.

Thanks!

BishopBerkeley: Bravo <Chessgames.com>!! All 11 games from Zappa's stunning & historic +10 =1 -0 (!!!) victory at the World Computer Chess Championship (Aug 13-21, 2005, Reykjavik, Iceland: http://www.ru.is/wccc05/ ) have now been posted!

They should afford many interesting hours of study for members of this fine site.

I am also delighted to see that Fruit (Computer) now has its own message board here at Chessgames.com Well deserved, Fruit!!

Excellent work!!

Dec-19-05  Radbul: And what about games from 25th Dutch Open (http://www.computerschaak.nl/docc05...) which Zappa (v2.1b) scored 7.5/9.0 for first place out of a field of 16 programs? (november 2005) And games that were already played in CSS OM 2005/6 Chempionships(http://www.beepworld.de/members39/c...)? Will they be avarible at the end of February when the CSS OM 2005/6 is over?
Dec-19-05  Norman Glaides: There's a big dilemma about my Big Leg Emma.
Dec-19-05  sneaky pete: Ah hah hah, oh yeah!
Dec-19-05  meloncio: She was my steady date, until she put on weight!!
Jan-04-06  Jafar219: Who is the creator of this computer? Frank Zappa?
Jan-04-06  csmath: It is Anthony Cozzie, grad student in Urbana. He is a program creator, machine he used is a standard dual Opteron dual core.
Jan-05-06  blingice: In downloading and installing Zappa from it's homepage: does anyone understand how? I have Arena and put the Zappa engine into it, but it has a message saying "Error: 'CreateProcess'" Explanations?
Feb-21-06  Whitehat1963: Who knew Frank was so good at chess? Only one loss in the database, and that one was avenged! Can this one be purchased OTC?
Feb-21-06  Jim Bartle: Was Frank ever on the Howard Stern show? Now that would have been interesting...

Feb-21-06  Whitehat1963: <Jim Bartle>, you are my comic relief. Thanks!

BishopBerkeley: Zappa is now available commercially: under the name "Zap!Chess". And (surprise, surprise) Chessbase is distributing it:

Apr-13-06  Dionyseus: <BishopBerkeley> Rybka will surely be next, and soon I presume.

BishopBerkeley: <Dionyseus> Wouldn't surprise me at all!

And yet, I wonder if the combined sales of the Chessbase programs have yet exceeded the sales of Chessmaster (Computer) ? I think Chessmaster remains the bestselling single Chess program of all time, though that may have changed. I think this is because of its user-friendliness, its extensive distribution network (I think it is on the shelves of all of the large office supply stores and many other stores), and its quality. It isn't as strong as Zappa (Computer) or Rybka (Computer) , but it is plenty strong for most serious players! (It has a rating of 2716 on this impressive list of competitors: http://web.telia.com/~u85924109/ssd... , 2723 on this list: http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/html/rati... )

BishopBerkeley: P.S. If anyone would like to download a free *complete* Chessplaying program (easy-to-install with a 2654 rating: not just an engine, but also an attractive interface) you might check out "Slow Chess Blitz":

Rating shown here:

P.S.2. On this rating list, Chessmaster (Computer) is listed by the name of its engine "The King" (rating 2723).

Jonny played the incomprehensible 153...Ka1?? completely throwing away an easy win.

Jun-18-06  chessmoron: Why is there no testing on Zap! Chess Reyjavik? This should be better than Paderborn.
