This is a book I highly recommend. The PDF I linked to will let you see the chapter titles and I think you, the reader here, will agree that it looks quite intriguing. It's great to have a book that takes an in depth look at the Socratic Method. When's the last time you decided to improve yourself? Maybe now is the time, and if you've studied critical thinking before and found your source material dry or uninspiring, then this book should fix all that. It's interesting and insightful.

While casually scrolling in the rogoff page today, it occurred to me just how ignorant the average person really is. They live the unexamined life, to paraphrase Socrates. The main characteristic that they all seem to have in common is their inability to uncover their own biases. Something of a Dunning-Kruger Effect, as mentioned by <gezafan> recently.

There are two types of ignoramuses.

1. The person who is unable to uncover their biases.

2. The person who doesn't want to uncover their biases and has no interest in doing the hard work necessary to develop true critical thinking skills and ultimately habits.

In the first case the person may take a step back from time to time and ponder, "do I have any biases, or, are all of my apparent biases simply justified? Gee, I don't really know, but they're probably justified."

In the second case such a person doesn't even care, think about or worry about any potential biases or assumptions he carries and has no intention of probing his mind for bad thought habits, fallacies or identifying areas of improvement. Just as a dog returns to lick up his vomit, this person laps up his own ignorance (and does not wipe his face clean.)

Education is not about the accelerated acquisition of data to flood one's mind with in order to pass academic exams and receive a diploma. A real education is about learning how to think clearly and wisely. Education should be a path to Wisdom, true wisdom. It should be the ability to discover the path to truth. Education should result in a well-trained mind.

Assumptions and biases are the hobgoblins of the mind that rob us of wisdom and truth, two things that are more valuable than knowledge of any other kind. Education should be about ridding one's mind of these hobgoblins, but unfortunately, most people's minds are full of these mischievous little creatures and they only multiply with age. It takes a well-trained mind to chase out these hobgoblins and finally think clearly and arrive, ultimately at truth and wisdom.
