Chessgames Bookie: UPDATE 2: And the lines are closed for the Friendly Tournament: WINNER, but I'm immediately refunding all bets for "Eric". Eric was a good friend, but I haven't seen him since he and I went to different high schools. :(

I imagine most people knew this was going to be refunded, since it's not 5 letters, nor has an "A" in it. Keep in mind I do remember having peers with 5 letter names (male) beginning with an "E", but I honestly would not want to see these people, ever again. ;)

Which one of the 3 players remaining (Allan, Brian, David) will finish in last place? The "games" are already underway. If you wish to bet on one of those games, you can.

Friendly Tournament: Draw No-Bet

Reminder that any people who still want to bet on Exotic: Even Odds can. Be careful though. I imagine a lot of people are also planning to place their bets last second. It closes at 10:00:00 <cg> time exactly!

- Penguin

P.S. Sorry if this is annoying, but there's only one more preseason update after this. Hang on in there. ;)

P.P.S. <Switch>, for the draw no bet, I accidently put in the dash, which put in a 3rd option. How do I get rid of an extra line without deleting the whole bet? :P For now, I just refunded it to make sure no one bets on it.

Chessgames Bookie: Last update of the preseason (hopefully):

Brian and David, 2 of my best friends, will share the trophy, as they both beat Allan, twice, and drew their H2H games, twice. Kinda ironic how Allan is the only one who actually knows how to play chess and still lost, but w/e. ;)

Exotic: Even Odds also closed recently, with a total of 1640 chessbucks. Next time, I should do something like "The line with the highest (or even lowest) amount of chessbucks will win". :)

Anyway, that concludes pre-summer training. Thanks all for your interest, and hoping for a smooth leg ahead! At this point, I'm waiting for the leaderboard to update one more time, and then I should be ready for the regular season. However, until Biel, I'm just going to be giving you some leftover tournaments. :)

Congrats to <Switch> for winning the preseason, and proving that he can win non-chess bets as well. :| He also beat the house (<Bookie>'s account says 1637 cbs). Good luck though. Here's another thing I'd like to jinx: no user who has won the preseason has even <qualified> the following leg.* :O

I'd also like to congrats <Penguincw> (that's me) and <Golden Executive> for becoming the only 2 users to ever place in the top 10 of the preseason 3 consecutive times.*

*Sorry, no reference of the Summer 2014 Leg preseason.

Good luck to me for the Summer!

Lake Sevan Tournament R2: Pick Three

Jul-13-15  gauer: Did you notice that you'd be leaving the "Canada / USA relations" wager as a 1 hour in-play bet, since rounds 6-8 start at 2pm (Toronto time), and not 4pm?! Round 9 starts closer to lunch on the Thursday as well.

One would assume a round-the-table refund would apply if the winning wager wasn't chosen?!

Yes, and no. On purpose, I left the bet open an hour after the U.S. Junior Championship bet would start < "Note: This bet will remain open for one hour after the U.S. Junior Championship will have started. If the game ends before closing time, all bets will stand." >. However, I didn't know that the Canadian Chess Championship would <also> be open for an hour after. Anyway, I'll go fix that, and of course, all bets will stand.

< One would assume a round-the-table refund would apply if the winning wager wasn't chosen?! >

I take back what I just said (sort of). A few hours ago, when I saw the tiny pool, I thought about refunding all bets (since there were like 18 cbs on it), I decided to wait, since most people bet around closing time. Now, there seems to be a decent sized pool, so all bets should stand.

Now if there is no money on the winning outcomes, 2/3 would win. For example, currently WBD has no backer. Now should that outcome occur, "2/3" outcomes would pay. So that would be DBD, BBD, WWD, WDD, WBW and WBB (or something like that). That is what is <supposed> to happen, but it has never actually occured before. History in the making?

Of course, it was real smart of me to open up a <2nd> P3 on the <same> day, but I wanted to do it just in case any bettors missed the first P3, and still wanted to bet. I also wanted to introduce the bettors to some Canadian chess. In my defense, I was half-asleep at that time (real smart of me I know). I'll just take this as my first real lesson learned from the Summer Leg. Thanks again. :)

Jul-13-15  gauer: Here's some helpful diplomatic relations to seed the bets up a bit: in the past 5 years of regular play, (if my adding was correct) Hansen (GM and past a Canadian champion) was +1-0=2 vs <IM> Gerzhoy (but they were also on Olympiad teams together, so there may be more unofficial sparrings - perhaps a draw predicted here) and <GM and previous Canadian champion> Sambuev was +1-0=0 vs <FIDE master> Peredun (from the Canadian crosstable pages).

Sounds good, if you can find me a site so simple, I can understand it (like chess-results, and not the site 2700chess lists). :) It also has to be in English (the Google Translate button is annoying).

<MarkFinan> I believe you requested something like this: LST/UJC: Doubled Pawns Special.

I can't quite remember what words went there, so tried my best. For now, I'm trying 10 games, seeing how it goes, and then I'll adjust it (although if it has to be longer, I might not get the chance until the World Cup).

Reminder to all that in case you haven't seen the announcement, I will be busy for most of the day, and might not pay off all bets until the afternoon (as a result, I already have R4 Lake Sevan bets up). Thanks for your patience, and sorry for any inconvenience. :)

Jul-14-15  MarkFinan: <<MarkFinan> I believe you requested something like this: LST/UJC: Doubled Pawns Special.>>

Thank you for remembering Pengerz, you're a top bloke but...

<<(ex. 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 counts as doubled pawn)>>

It does?? To me that's taking a pawn. Of course that's going to happen, you have to take pawns diagonally, lol. You know I love you really Pengerz but that's not what switch did. The bet was something like a doubled pawn (ex. pawns on c4 & c5) in 20 games. All 20 games have doubled pawns at some point in the game. Well I haven't lost much (I really should read the whole conditions!) but if that Yes ticket doesn't pay out I'll go and agree with <HMM> about his football rule changes, lol.

I know you're new Pengerz, I'm not complaining just pointing out the mistake. I'm sure you'll make a good job of it, I really should have said something to you when I realized you were going to be the next bookie.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <MarkFinan> As far as I can tell, the terms of LST/UJC: Doubled Pawns Special are identical to those I used for the 20-game bet, except that the 20-game bet additionally stipulated that tripled pawns should not appear in any of the games.
Jul-14-15  MarkFinan: <<(ex. 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 counts as doubled pawn)>>

You never had this though Switch^^. And why do you think you currently have to put 100 cb's on the yes ticket to win 110 when before it was more or less 50/50. The Yes ticket will pay because all that has to happen is someone takes a pawn in each game.

Before, on your wager, I knew the No ticket was going to pay and that's why I put all my funds on it. This time, with the above exd term, the Yes ticket pays.

I'll try find my post from when you did it.

I didn't want to say anything before, but if I read this bet correctly (which i must have) then this was the biggest money printer I've seen at the bookies. 20 games <all> with doubled pawns?>

Switch.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <MarkFinan> I don't have a copy of the terms of Dogberry's Pawn Structure Special, but I'm pretty sure the bet description was something like this:

<"Dogberry has made the following prediction for round 8: doubled pawns will appear at some point in all 20 games, while tripled pawns will not appear in any.

Is Dogberry right? If the prediction comes true, the 'YES' ticket will pay; if not, the 'NO' ticket will pay.

The doubled/tripled pawns do not have to remain on the board for more than one ply to count.">

Apart from the bit about tripled pawns and the use of 20 instead of 10, this is functionally identical to <Penguincw>'s rules. As <centralfiles> noted in his reply to the post you quoted above (Chessgames Bookie chessforum (kibitz #8369)):

<centralfiles: <markfinan> For one ply means just about any pawn capture in the opening qualifies as a doubled pawn e.g. e4 c5 d4 cxd4 Nxd4 is a doubled pawn game.>

Jul-14-15  MarkFinan: Okay. I'll put 200 on it if it's the same. As you can see I only got around (roughly) 6/4 on your bet.. I'm getting 20/1 on this bet.

Penguincw: I'm back (I think)! Give me a bit of time to restore everything back to order (pay off bets, put up new ones, etc.). Once again, thanks all for your understanding. :)

<Beholder> Thanks (I was too lazy). I'll try to get some bets on that.

<Mark>, <Switch> Regarding LST/UJC: Doubled Pawns Special.

Hehe, it seems that I forgot about the tripled pawns part. Anyway all bets will stand (of course), so do whatever you want. However, this bet will likely not return for the future, so be sure to take advantage of it now. :)

All 3 ex-bookies on the leaderboard, while there is a tie for 1st with 1999 cbs (one short of 2000). Also, to even be displayed on the leaderboard, one needs to be at +72, and this is <2> days (but 26 bets) into the season.

Must be an easy leg (FTR, if I competed for real, I would currently be at 1022 cbs).

Penguincw: For the 2nd straight round, the Daily Double for the U.S. Junior Championship has empty lines. :|

However, I believe it has to do with the games I chose, and not the actual event. Nevertheless, when DD is a <jackpot> possibility, something is wrong.

Draw-Draw might actually occur though. Depends on if Xiong would want to push hard for a win (and possibly lose), or wants to settle for an early draw.

Oops. Thanks again!

I don't think I really need an explanation, but in case you request one: most rounds start at 10:00 (17:00 their time), and here, I saw 10:00 their time, thinking it's 10:00 <cg> time.

7 hours is a big difference though...
