Chessgames Bookie: Hello, I'm the Chessgames Bookie. I maintain the ChessBookie Game. Today is April 1st, and that's the first day of the Spring Leg of the ChessBookie competition.

There are several purposes to this forum:

♔ I'll be around to answer questions about the that the ChessBookie Game doesn't cover.

♔ You are encouraged to offer suggestions about possible upcoming betting propositions.

♔ If you spot any errors, please inform me here.

♔ Feel free to boast about your victories, and to groan about your losses.

If you're new to the game (and today, everybody is) please take some time to read over the help page and check things out before you start to toss your money around.

Chessgames Bookie: <we're not worthy> Probably not, but that's OK, we just want the action!

< Topalov vs Nisipeanu Match >

This is the first major betting event. The odds are already sliding heavily in Topalov's favor. (No surprise there.)

Note that we will have betting on the individual games, round by round. (These will appear as soon as we figure out who gets the white pieces in the first game.) Don't blow your whole bankroll on the outcome of the match, save a little money to have fun betting round-by-round.

Also, a word of warning: the official game has begun! Be careful about running out and blowing all of your chessbucks on tickets, especially longterm events like the Mtel Master's tournament in May. You will not receive any new chessbucks until the end of the Spring Leg, which is in about 3 months.

Apr-01-06  THE pawn: Will <computer vs computer> and <computer vs human> matches be included in this new feature? For exemple, Kramnik vs Deep Fritz?
Apr-01-06
Premium Chessgames Member
  Chessgames Bookie: Of course!
Apr-01-06  THE pawn: Ah. So if <Hydra> is involved in a match, I suppose there's no point in betting for his opponent.
Apr-01-06  blingice: Pardon me, <Chessgames Bookie>, where do you buy your oh-so-stylish clothes?
Apr-01-06  Resignation Trap: Considering what today is, is this real, or a joke?
Apr-01-06  blingice: <RT> Looks pretty legit. Why wouldn't it be? It's a full out program, with it's own FAQs, Beta testers, etc.
Apr-01-06  WarmasterKron: <THE pawn> That's silly talk. Since the odds are likely to be very generous on an opponent of Hydra, all the more reason to bet on them. Hydra is not invincible, after all.

Having said that, I'm sure it will come as no surprise to anyone that I have bet on Kamsky to win the M-Tel Masters, and on Topalov to both win and lose his match with Nisipeanu.

WannaBe: What happens if you blow it all (lost all your pretend $$)?!
Apr-01-06  suenteus po 147: <WannaBe> A cordial gentleman by the name of <Chessgames Loan Shark> will be happy to lend you undisclosed amounts of currency so that you may continue to play :D

WannaBe: Actually.... hum... let me look at this again... Don't need Mr. baseball bat to pay a visit to my knees. :-)
Apr-01-06  dakgootje: <Resignation Trap> would be a little too big to make this only for a joke i think....
Apr-01-06  dakgootje: Ow and if this isnt a joke, can there be placed a link to this page then at the enhanced menu (the one at the top of your screen, if you chose for it)?
Apr-01-06  thesonicvision: this IS most definitely an april
fool's joke.
elaborate, creative, but a prank
nonetheless.

well done, chessgames.com

  WannaBe: April 2nd 2006 Headline,

ATF raids computer chess server in Florida, dozens arrested. Claims to be a legal gambling ring.

<RonB52734> has volunteered to defend the server based upon first amendment rights.

Sen. Kennedy (D-Mass.) have come out and claimed computer chess and betting on the outcome should be illegal. All chess related servers are ordered to cease operations. Congress will debate this issue before session is over.

Supreme court has agreed to hear <RonB52734>'s arguments in 2007. Hon. C. Thomas and Hon. D. Souter both to have claimed they know nothing about gambling.

Hon. A. Scalia said that he just hope that in the NCAA Final, both team will score a lot of points, something about 'taking the over'.

Chessgames Bookie: <April Fool's> This is definitely no joke.

If you run out of money, you can try to get back into the game with the Loanshark. In fact, you could loan money from him right now, but at his exorbitant interest rates you may want to think carefully before adopting that strategy. If worse comes to worst, your net worth will turn negative, but you'll always be able to loan 100 chessbucks per day to make small wagers with.

This is the first day of the Spring Leg, which means that you won't get any more money for about 90 days. When this leg is over and the Summer Leg begins, all accounts will be cleared out and 1000 chessbucks will be deposited. All loanshark debts are cleared out at that time as well. Please note that the top 10 places in the Spring Leg will automatically qualify for the <ChessBookie World Championship> which takes place in the Winter Leg.

I've already seen some people make large wagers on the Mtel Master's tournament. That's fine by me, but these people will have money tied up in that tournament until it's over, which isn't until May 21st. Perhaps they will end up wishing that they held onto their chessbucks until the event approached, but we can't help them there, as there are no refunds for live tickets.

Finally, read the ChessBookie Game Help Page before you start playing in earnest.

WannaBe: I blame this whole thing on <YouRang> and his 'dollar' wager during the prediction contest. :-)
Apr-01-06  nsteinme: awesome new feature :)
Apr-01-06  Benzol: Can you save your "Chessbucks" and hold them over until the next leg? If so, is there any limit you can save to?

Sneaky: Hey, how come on Nisipeanu is the #2 seed in the European Individual Championships, when everybody knows he's due to play Topalov from the 6th through 9th. Is he actually going to be doing both??

WannaBe: <Sneaky:...is he doing both?> FIXED!! Fixed!! =) I smell a fix!! Oh, someone is knocking on my door, and I see a baseball bat in his hand... :-(

Chessgames Bookie: <Benzol> Absolutely not; at the end of every leg all accounts are reset to 1000, and loans are wiped clean as well. However, if you place in the top ten positions, you will start the Winter Leg with 10,000 c.b. instead of the normal 1,000 and be in a good position to become that year's World ChessBookie Champion.

<Sneaky> I'm not sure what that means. It's possible we're being fed incorrect information from the official sites, but if that's the case, we always have the power to refund tickets.

<All> Remember, most of your questions can be answered at the ChessBookie Game Help Page.

cu8sfan: You guys will never believe how much blood, sweat and tears it took to beta-test this feature.

<WannaBe: What happens if you blow it all (lost all your pretend $$)?!> I took the perils and tested this, too. Well, nothing at all will happen. However, because of your low funds the feature is not as much fun anymore. Loanshark is a lone shark. He has no bullies to send you go sleep with the fish.

Have fun, y'all!
