chancho: <Jim> Placcid clown... he's insulting <robmtchll> again. He said $40,000 because he figured if he had said $35,000 then he gives himself away. Kind of lame, especially since it's so easy to see it's him.
Aug-05-09  Colonel Mortimer: <I fear the consequences of the chemical reaction from combining Ed Trice and truth serum.> Yeah that experiment would defintely have to go in the fume cupboard.
Aug-05-09  Jim Bartle: So a first-time poster refers to Rob Mitchell as a "flaccid clown," without even using his name.

You'd think Trice would be a little more careful in his skullduggery.

Old story: Things hadn't been going well for a former NBA center, seven-footer Reggie Harding, so he put on a ski mask, went to the neighborhood liquor store and demanded the owner give him the money in the register.

Owner: "Come on, Reggie, don't do this."

Reggie: "It's not me, man."

Trice is like a seven-footer who thinks nobody will recognize him because he wears a disguise.

chancho: <I won't take any sides over the nearly $40,000, but IMHO, that flaccid clown's TOTAL FAILURE is the central issue!>

If he's not taking sides, why the insults? And calling Rob a failure, that's what Trice tends to say to his enemies.

Aug-06-09  SugarDom: Hey hey...

Can anybody answer my question above?...

Gothic chess is not an original idea, so how could it have an inventor?

They were already talking about this, during Capablanca's era...

Aug-06-09  JustToClarify: Gothic Chess is dead. My 61 Memorable Games is dead; I'm not sure Trice even got the money he spent publishing these books back.

I just updated the Gothic Chess Wikipedia article to mention the expired patent again, and put the entire article in the past tense because, well, no one plays Gothic Chess. No one has played Gothic Chess ever since Trice's behavior pissed off the admins of BrainKing and they replaced Gothic Chess with Embassy Chess.

Aug-06-09  JustToClarify: Anyway, another editor felt it was not appropriate for me to put Gothic Chess in the past tense, so I gave him the BrainKing article as evidence that Gothic Chess is of nothing more than historical interest today.

Gothic Chess is dead.

  chancho: Ed Trice's Gothic empire:

http://www.linkedin.com/in/edtrice

Note that he's still maintaining that he has a patent on Gothic Chess...

Aug-06-09  JustToClarify: Ed Trice's LinkedIn profile is here:

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/ed-tric...

He claims to be the president of "Four Incorporated" that he claims "Currently employ 14 people in 3 different states as independent contractors in the Information Technology sector"

A Google Search for "Ed Trice Four Incorporated" shows that, like Trice's other delusions, this company only exists in Trice's head (there's only Trice's LinkedIn profile, and a single Usenet posting where someone makes fun of the name "Four Incorporated" on Ed's LinkedIn profile). I mean, Trice didn't even put up a webpage with a domain to give this imaginary company even the veneer of legitimacy.

Aug-06-09  robmtchl: His linkedin profile says he is a MENSA member?

<Ed Trice’s Groups:
IEEE, United States Chess Federation, Mensa >

Any way to prove that?

Aug-06-09  JustToClarify: You know, it's an interesting question whether Trice is smart enough to qualify for Mensa membership. You've met him in real life; I have not; so you're probably better qualified to assess his intelligence.

Trice is many things: Delusional, no inter-personal skills to speak of, no empathy or care about anyone besides himself, and infamous on the internet, but he might just be smart enough to qualify for Mensa membership.

Then again, if he was smart, he would not be a 1300 chess player, and would have a reasonably successful business.

Aug-06-09  Riverbeast: <Then again, if he was smart, he would not be a 1300 chess player, and would have a reasonably successful business>

You don't need to be anything close to a genius to join Mensa, despite it's reputation.....A reasonably high score on standardized tests such as the SAT are enough to qualify one for membership.

And chess strength doesn't necessarily equate to intelligence....Einstein was not a very strong chessplayer either, and there are a lot of good chessplayers that are not particularly accomplished in other fields of intellect.

Also, intelligence isn't necessary to run a successful business...A fair amount of hard work and stick-to-it-iveness is usually sufficient

chancho: <Einstein was not a very strong chessplayer either>

Einstein probably didn't care too much for Chess I reckon. He said: <"Master chess grips it's exponent, shackling his mind and brain, so that the inner freedom and independence of even the strongest character cannot remain unaffected.">

Aug-06-09  Jim Bartle: Maybe Einstein preferred to make up new rules (in physics) rather than play by the established rules (chess).

IMlday: JTC: You wrote: "My 61 Memorable Games is dead". I expect time will show you to be wrong about that.

The question of the authorship of the original manuscript is not related to Ed Trice, neither his layout and possibly pirate printing, nor his involvement in publicity, distribution efforts etc. Those are separate issues from original authorship.

If Ed Trice had tried using a computer to disguise himself as Bobby Fischer then the trick would be easy to spot for any master reading it who was looking for evidence. I looked for it. It is not there. Forgery by Trice is an untenable fanciful theory that is refuted by the manuscript itself.

Among gaping holes in the theory I have already given the example of the donkey at Sousse. "chancho" regularly replies that the donkey's existence is mentioned in Frank Brady's book. Fine, but the M61MG author explains why the donkey was useful. That information is not in Brady's book. Why would a forger include such irrelevant information which, were it incorrect, would expose himself to refutation by any other surviving player from the tournament?

Similarly, a line like "I analysed this position in 1994 with Eugene Torre". Why would a forger put in something that GM Torre could simply say: "No I didn't" and the ruse be exposed? Likewise, he describes private conversations, e.g. with Dimitrije Bjelica or Zita Raiczanyi. Surely a forger would simply avoid writing things which could be proven false by the others involved.

The forgery theory necessitates that the forger was hopelessly incompetent, easily giving himself away. In that case, according to the theory, I must be an idiot not to have noticed. But I'm not an idiot.

Another inconsistency for those who think Ed Trice forged this book: Obviously Ed is a shameless self-promoter, so how could he resist putting his name in somewhere?

And, good grief, why would he forgo proof-reading and rush to the ebay auction before Bobby Fischer's demise? How did he know that Fischer himself would not publicly state that the book was a forgery?

There is a very obvious occam answer: Because it is not a forgery.

Therefore "My 61 Memorable Games is dead" seems to be an overly hasty judgment.

(& since there are so many sock armies involved with this topic please prove yourself to me by changing my wiki entry: my "bout with cancer" was mid-1970s not 1990s:)

chancho: <IMDay> You try to explain the books authenticity by asking us how did the forger knew this, or that, to convince that Fischer indeed wrote the book. You are no doubt a very intelligent man. Can you please try and explain these questions for us?

1.How do you explain Ed Trice accusing Ed Labate of being the person behind the book scam M61MG back in Dec 2007, but later on Trice says that the book was really written by Bobby Fischer? Why did he do that? And for what purpose?

2. Why would Einar Einarsson step forward and say Fischer did not write the book?

What did Einarsson have to gain by doing this?

3. Why was Ed Trice saying in this forum that he saw 5 copies of M61MG in the bookstore Chess4less, and that he bought two of the copies, and later Greg Yanez and Bill Goichberg approached him, with Yanez asking Trice why he was saying in the internet that the books were in his bookstore, and Bill Goichberg telling Trice to put the books away?

4.Why does Ed Trice keep talking about the book every chance he gets, touting your expertise, and review of the book, when again, he accused Ed Labate of being Helgi, and the architect of the bookscam at Ebay auction ?

5.And where do you think he actually got the books he said he bought at the bookstore? Here's the youtube video from the 2009 World Open:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wofH...

Aug-06-09  Jim Bartle: Mr. Day, from the seven to ten pages I've seen so far, the writing style is just so bad, so execrable, and so totally at variance from Fischer's earlier style, that it suggests very strongly that Fischer did not write it.

Do you honestly find it well written? Even monstrosities like this from p. 735? "...each player has roughly the same level of Kingside resources distributed relatively suitably for the position, and Queenside has the appearance of defensibility, though in a state of pending liquidation. Such a static summary is shattered by the strategic maneuver I was about to undertake with the Knight."

You say there is no evidence that Trice wrote the text of "61." You've written that the style of Trice's Gothic chess annotations is not similar to those of "61." I find them extremely similar, strikingly so. I find it evidence that Trice wrote it.

Mr. Day, do you also believe that Trice has NOT written posts using different names? I think it takes willful blindness not to see that. (Of course, that's not evidence of forgery, but it does raise questions.) Check the post by "shoelaces," his very first post (!), and tell me you don't think Trice had anything to do with it.

You should also realize that I, and I believe many of the posters here, have been banned by Trice on his chessforum. He has also made a habit of deleting posts he doesn't like. So the idea that the Trice chessforum is an honest exchange of ideas is ludicrous.

( a bit before that, but I quote his reply and my question for <IMlday> still stands...)

Aug-06-09  PinnedPiece: <May-03-09:
IMlDay: There are many possible reasons for the undeniable murk. Evidently Batsford itself isn't clear on the copyright for North American rights to M60MG. Larry Bevand had to buy through a middleman to get copies for Strategy Games in Canada because B's didn't want to risk being sued. I believe Batsfords had big money problems circa 1997 and a court unwound it's assets? Having Fischer attacking them in wacky press conferences wasn't good for business.>

Haven't you since posted that one of the publishers has released their control of their claim to copyright on the Fischer continuations in M60MG, or something like that? (I'm being sloppy here expressly to invite you to correct the misapprehension).

If that's the case, can you see that their action OUGHT to have some effect on a LEGITIMATE M61MG--if there were such a thing? Yet still no announcement by the supposed inner circle. You would think that even if a grey-colored scam, Trice could have convinced someone (Fischer's wife) by now of the potential rewards of validating the book.

Hasn't happened.
