While most people use this space to talk about chess and politics, I want to share a story that has haunted me - and Ireland - since 2009.It begins in Sligo, Ireland. A man arrived by bus, meticulously dressed and soft-spoken. He checked into a hotel under the name "Peter Bergmann" and gave an address in Austria. It is almost certain that both were fake.
Over the next few days, CCTV captured him leaving his hotel with a purple plastic bag, only to return empty-handed. He was systematically disposing of his belongings in public bins, using blind spots to avoid detection. He even cut the labels off his clothes. On June 16, 2009, his body was found on Rosses Point beach. He had died of natural causes, but he had gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure no one would ever know who he was.
Why am I posting this here?
Because someone, somewhere, knows who "Peter" was. He was likely of German or Austrian descent (Swiss is also possible, even Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Denmark cannot be ruled out), aged 55-65, ~178 cm (5'10") with blue eyes and a heavy German accent.
