Brilliant literary style, too. I read the book a few times over the years, and although Mr.Shirer was not a historian by profession, I find this to be one of the best books ever written on the topic. Tons of fascinating material, but the 2 co-authors chose to present it in the most lecture-esque and driest, monotone style possible. How you can do it in monotone in print is beyond me, but them 2 did it. This one, is going way faster, and much smoother in the flow and the story. Another reason I like to read Simon Winchester, when he is not writing on rock and geology. (Which is what Simon got his degree in, he does it almost as bad as watching paint dry.
