 | | WannaBe: Thought Bodemeister was going to do it wire-to-wire, maybe got tired? 20 horses.is just too much, I am always afraid somebody and horses is gonna get hurt, trying to go through the traffic. |
|
| May-05-12 | | technical draw: "And They're Off" always gets the early lead but never seems to finish. |
|
| May-05-12 | | Jim Bartle: And Activity is always getting warmed up in the bullpen but never gets in the game. |
|
| May-06-12 | | technical draw: And Hopalong is always on the outside and never wins. You hear it in every race narration, "Hopalong the outside..." (this is a true fact joke as one guy I knew actually thought there was a horse named Hopalong) |

 | | WannaBe: "On the Rail" never wins either. =(
But I always bet on the ambulance to come in last, the people at the window never give me my ticket. |

| May-06-12 | | technical draw: <(this is a true fact joke as one guy I knew actually thought there was a horse named Hopalong)> Now I remember correctly; he thought there was a horse named "Apolonia". |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: 44...g5 would have kept the game going. |
|
| May-10-12 | | technical draw: <That's pretty cool <Wannabe>. I'll work something out with it.> That's a nice way of saying I'm going to steal it. |
|
| May-10-12 | | BadKnight: <SwitchingQuylthulg> Thanks for the comment. I did not even consider any move like this in the position. i was simply scared to create any outside passed pawn as then bishop might be faster than the knight creating trouble. it looked white can not allow the knight to d4 as then he is doomed, but i did not see how to force it. now i just had a quick engine check, and Massive complications arise after 44...g5 and Mr. Houdini says black is slightly better. Sliding through the engine lines, it feels like i had chances. But there was no way i could have calculated any of these, so i chickened out. I realized i had an easy draw without doing anything so i just waited and the result was a draw. |

| May-11-12 | | chesstoplay: Hi < WannaBe >,
Do you know who Stan Lee was playing chess against at the end of the Avenger's movie? He looked familiar, but I couldn't place the face.
I've put the question out there in several places and can't come up with an answer. Hope you can help.
TY in advance!

| May-11-12 | | BadKnight: Time to get new games on gameknot, captain! |
|
| May-11-12 | | BadKnight: Here goes an open question to anyone experienced in correspondence games. I have found openings to be huge problems. Its not easy to get a reasonably fighting game. I am not very well versed in opening theory, and i don't want to come out of the opening with a clearly inferior/lost position, so i would have to find reasonably good moves. and that leads us to follow databases very deep into late into the late middlegame, and clearly we are not thinking on our own until very late. Surprise/trick moves are not likely to work because opponent has enough time to work them out. So the main idea is either deviate early from the mainline and enter completely new type of positions, or find novelty in well trodden lines, or enter uncharted territories. In any case, its easier said than done. So the obvisous question is, how to get a game? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <BadKnight: So the main idea is either deviate early from the mainline and enter completely new type of positions, or find novelty in well trodden lines, or enter uncharted territories.> Or just outplay the other guy in the endgame and late middlegame! Maybe you can't always get a tactical struggle, but there's no need to let that stop you from winning :) Even in drawish-looking endgames there are still plenty of opportunities left. 44...g5!? in your game against jivko's a case in point... or take the game below, which for the first 21 moves looks like a textbook example of failing to get a reasonably fighting game: goodchessactor - quylthulg, GameKnot 2011

| May-12-12 | | technical draw: That's good advice Switchy but did you have to use one of my losing games as an example? aaarrrggghh! |
|
| May-13-12 | | BadKnight: yeah good advice. I never liked to play endgames much. To begin with, its Alekhine's combinative games that brought my interest to the game. I keep losing interest in the board as more and more pieces come off, and my brain tend to switch off in the endgames. I often assume things are too simple, so horrible things are not likely to happen. But they do. Chess is never simple, and its cruel. In the middlegame a bit of inaccuracy and you often get a chance to make a comeback, but in the endgame a small slip and you are spot dead. sad, but what can you do! |
|
| May-13-12 | | BadKnight: Captain <WannaBe>, this is for you.
I am playing two team games now. And in one of them my opponent is throwing the game away. I know the game is currently ongoing so i am forbidden to speak about it until its over, but i just could not resist. i am white, and the game is going on now. My opponent has played a lot of games on gameknot and currently 1750+ rated, so he is not an idiot for sure. 1.e4 f5? 2. exf5 Nc6?? 3.Qh5+ is the current position. As i understand the position is closest possible to fool's mate. I activated two series of conditional moves. 3...g6(only legal move) 4. fxg6 and
a) 4...hxg6 5. Qxg6#
b) 4...Nf6 5.g7+ Nxh5 (only legal move) 6. gxh8Q.
you could/should keep quiet and not correct me now, and let the game go on in case i am hallucinating something, but i believe its highly unlikely. i don't know what else to say. |
