<Jer 20:10-13

Jeremiah said:

"I hear the whisperings of many:
'Terror on every side!
Denounce!
Let us denounce him!'
All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine.

Perhaps he'll be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.

But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph.

In their failure, they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion.

O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you, I have entrusted my cause.

Sing to the LORD,
praise the LORD,
for he has rescued the life of the poor
from the power of the wicked!">

<1 Corinthians 13

13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.>

<The Promise of the Lord's Coming

The Second Letter of Peter

Chapter 3

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you

2 that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.

3 First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts

4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!?

5 They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water,

6 through which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished.

7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the godless.

8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.

9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness,

12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire?

13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Final Exhortation and Doxology

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish;

15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,

16 speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures.

17 You therefore beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.

Amen.>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.>
Jan-16-06  you vs yourself: About <tittle>: I have seen you correct that user numerous times that anyone with a decent IQ wouldn't have made that mistake again. But when I saw that same thing again, it just seemed intentional and the first thing that hit me is that the mistake was made to lure you into guessing the user name. Do you think that user just doesn't get it? Or is he just covering up his mistake by repeating it and making it seem like it's used intentionally for comic relief?
Looks like I'm the only one on <CG> that isn't one <LMAJ> ignore list-- hopefully this will be the year.
Congrats!
Jan-21-06  mr. nice guy: <chancho> Continua tu cruzada. Ese tipo AJ me cae pesadisimo. Tiene complejo de intelectual y lo que termina siendo es un pobre haz-me-reir de los demas.
Jan-22-06  meloncio: <mr.nice guy> Tienes razón, pero no hay que ser cruel. Por cierto, ¿qué cosa es ese título de Life Master? ¿Maestro de por Vida, o sea, para siempre? Nunca escuché nada igual.
  tpstar: <chancho> One productive way to use your chessforum to improve would be to post your own games here, then review variations and suggestions with the group, and even include computer analysis where pertinent. I post my games under a db game, then categorize them by opening for future reference, but being systematic helps save time later. Personally I believe all games above 3 min/side have legitimate value for study purposes, but not everyone agrees with this. =)
Other forums with puzzles and problems can go for days without responses, so maybe allow 2 days before deleting anything. Beyond that, I've had comments on my games months and years later; who knows who might stop by later? Remember there's a core group who visit every day, but others log on once a week or less. :)
  tpstar: <chancho> Beautiful game! The Rossolimo is a good way to avoid the main lines (3. d4), but Black is supposed to recapture 4 ... Qxd7 and then note 5. d4 scores well for Black Opening Explorer. Instead this game is most similar to yours C Torres vs U Methmalee, 2004 although White chose 7. Qxd4. I think your plan of 7. Nxd4 & 10. f4 with a Kingside Pawn storm was better. 16. f6! was an excellent Pawn sacrifice opening lines; Black should have declined with 16 ... Bf8. Then 19. Nh6 was a fine finesse, inducing 19 ... Rf8 while preventing ... Rg8 (crucial with the open g file). After 22. Qf5 I don't see any defense for Black (22 ... Rg8+ 23. Kh1 Rg6? 24. Nxf7+; 23 ... Kg7 24. Ng4) and 24. Rxf6! was a nice finish. =)
Jan-30-06  notyetagm: Go checkout the Chess Tactics Server at http://www.chess.emrald.net/index.php.
You are given a bunch of tactical problems to solve lickety-split. Top score on the server is 2016. I clock in at 1479.
Good luck if you try it!
Jan-30-06  hayton3: The idea of a checklist predates Neaderthal master AJ. He also omits to mention the concepts of space and time in his checklist - a huge blunder in itself which I gather the purpose of his checklist was attempting to avoid.
His point about making a plan and religiously sticking to it is naive. Grandmasters continually flip flop in a game - its the nature of cat and mouse between two strong and equally matched opponents. Plans are often little more complicated than wanting to put a piece on a particular square because that is what the master thinks the position requires, and in order to do that he may have to make a few preparatory moves which in their turn may be sub-objectives. AJ doesn't seem to grasp this.
Jan-31-06  notyetagm: <hayton3:... His point about making a plan and religiously sticking to it is naive.>
Sounds like <LMAJ> has played over too many <Grandmaster-NN> games. Those one-sided games are good for showing what you should plan and how to execute your plan, since NN offers no resistance against the plan being implemented.
A case in point is that famous Schlechter vs W John, 1905 game, in which Schlechter's opponent seems to have never heard of the strategic concepts of a complex of weak dark squares or a bad bishop. Schlechter is able to carry out a methodical campaign on the dark squares and crush his amateur opponent.
But when you play someone at your own level, this idea of "sticking to your plan" is absurd. You best believe that Botvinnik did not "stick to his plan" when playing Smyslov, because Smyslov did not let him.
  WannaBe: <chancho> Pretty much. The TVs didn't want to cover 2 olympics in the same year and have the viewers have too much Olympics sweet stories, hence die of sugar over-dose.
So instead of, oh, say Coke, McDonalds, or IBM, pumping some huge sum of money to be a sponsor every 4 years, they now pump only 1/2 of that every 2 years.
Feb-15-06  who: <Hayton3> <His point about making a plan and religiously sticking to it is naive.> It may be so, but Golombek in his introduction to Keres and Kotov's "Art of the Middle Game" says that he feels that one of the big differences between good players and amateur players is that amateur players flip-flop on their plans, whereas good ones stick to it. I will try to find the exact quote when I get home tonight.
