 | | Check It Out: I think all should note this:
< moodini: Has the website got hacked? Either that or somebody intercepted my password (the site does not use https). I got a ridiculous email trying to blackmail me which showed my password for this site (which I don't use anywhere else).> That also happened to me with my CG password recently. I recommend everybody change their password, and use one that you don't use anywhere else. |

| Aug-07-18 | | thegoodanarchist: I propose the following for QOTD:
<<<... Don't surround yourself with yourself
Move on back two squares
Send an instant karma to me
Initial it with loving care

Why?

| Aug-07-18 | | drollere: i'd encourage those who can to post an obit on this site celebrating mr. freeman and what he built here. it's quite a unique achievement. i'd hope some of the better rated and more frequent visitors to this site are communicating gentle guidance and support to the current operators. there's an opportunity for someone who knows the difference between a monday puzzle and a friday puzzle to step up as puzzle editor. no harm recycling puzzles every five years or so. if the site is currently hosted rather than staffed, it would be prudent to back up everything as a contingency against retail hosting misadventures. |

| Aug-07-18 | | zanzibar: <<CIO> That also happened to me with my CG password recently. I recommend everybody change their password, and use one that you don't use anywhere else.> What?! And you didn't post a notice here until after <moodini>? Let me point out the obvious then, without an active webmaster to fix any/all security breeches, changing the password is no guarantee of security. . |

 | | WannaBe: Did this site ever had https or SSL certificate? Trying to remember... |

 | | Annie K.: Daniel was just working on converting the site to https. |
|
| Aug-07-18 | | zanzibar: <WannaBe> I think your skill set is needed. Alas! I'm curious, does anybody have an old traceroute (tracert) to www.chessgames.com? Here's the tail of the current version:
<
9 46 ms 49 ms 44 ms mia-edge-03.inet.qwest.net [67.14.29.130]
10 * 44 ms 43 ms 63.237.255.2

Somebody likes <carlsen> it seems! (And damn it, <CG>, when are you going to get us that verbatim mode?!) |

 | | Check It Out: <zanzibar: What?! And you didn't post a notice here until after <moodini>?> This was not the only site I used that password on so I did not put the two together. However, <moodini>'s description of ridiculous blackmail sounds similar to the email I received. |
|
| Aug-07-18 | | zanzibar: Ah, thanks for the update then. Sounds bad... |

| Aug-07-18 | | WinKing: There's a case for having a sockpuppet with a different password just in case you need to get in touch with chessgames. |

 | | Check It Out: <WinKing: There's a case for having a sockpuppet with a different password just in case you need to get in touch with chessgames.> <Annie K.: <CIO> I don't believe anybody has access to chess@chessgames.com at the moment. This is a major problem.> Indeed. Communication needs to improve. |

 | | WannaBe: Found some interesting things after reading the password change posts. I need to do some research and see what I can find out. Need some time. |
|
| Aug-08-18 | | zanzibar: Does anybody know what exactly is <Sargon>'s role from here on? User: sargon He hasn't even logged on since Jul-30-2018, and other than the announcement, had only made this post from way back in mid-May: <May-16-18
Sargon: <Tabanus: Sargon is boycotting me again.>Labor dispute... <<>>> Maybe <Tab> can say if the dispute ever was settled? . |

 | | Annie K.: Kevin would like help with the selection of puzzles and/or other good puzzle sources. Who wants to volunteer / is recommended? |
|
| Aug-08-18 | | Tiggler: After reading some recent posts here and on <Annie K.>, <OhioChessFan> and <Daniel Freeman> pages I am feeling very uneasy about using this site. It feels as though it has been taken over by bandits. So I'll just check out for a while. Hope I am wrong, and will see you all later. |
|
| Aug-08-18 | | heuristic: <annie k: puzzles>
this yahoo suggested that the "crowd" be the finder and selector:
chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #29049)
a simple page with seven fields (1 per difficulty) and folks update act accordingly. like others, I don't have the time for a dedicated role. this site is unique in the amount of crowdsourcing (tournament index, biographer bistro, Christmas puzzles) and my personal feeling is that we should continue that... |
|
| Aug-08-18 | | WinKing: Attention <Annie K.> & <Kevin>: Daniel Freeman <takchess> has offered to help with the Puzzles. |
|
Aug-08-18
 | | Annie K.: <WinKing> thanks. <heuristic> this may be an interesting suggestion for the future. Try bringing it up when things get back to normal. |

It feels as though it has been taken over by bandits. So I'll just check out for a while. Hope I am wrong, and will see you all later.> lol
People get to a certain age and they think there are bandits and hackers everywhere online trying to get them. As if using this site is somehow going to cause them trouble, because bandits are here. lols |
|
| Aug-08-18 | | Big Pawn: If bandits are here, then not using the site isn't going to save you from them seeing your CC number. lol
Like hackers would say, "OH, Tiggler is not here anymore. Don't look at his information. Go to the next guy" |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Big Pawn> What is the CC number? I'm hoping it means Correspondence Chess number because then I don't have one. |
|
| Aug-08-18 | | JimNorCal: <jfq> Credit Card number. Most of us have warnings enabled. Whether wanted or not, LOL. So unusual charges will bring an inquiry from the bank or other issuer of the card. <bp> is probably correct that any danger to us personally is via false CC charges. I would not be worried that someone posted awful comments using my name. I don't think I would even stand out .... |
