Seconded. How about it, admins? A week in the hole, maybe? Or force <AJ> on <Barleycorn>'s ignore list?

Quite right. I don't read some peoples' comments unless I have to. I like <John Barleycorn>'s comments, though. He deflates bombast.

Apr-02-14  twinlark: Hi <ceegee>

Java problems are probably starting to get tedious but I can't solve a problem. I tried to upgrade Java and received a corrupt msi file error message (using Windows XP).

I ended up uninstalling the earlier versions to start a download from scratch. I eventually was able to install Java 7 update 51 without using Service Pack 3 (thanks to the household help desk), but I still can't open the games on each game page.

When I try and activate a board display, an error message pops up that says:

<Application blocked. Click for Details - your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running.>

I click on the Details button and the Java Console comes up with an alphabet soup of options. I don't want to hit the wrong one.

They are as follows:

c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization queue
g: garbage collect
h: display this help message
l: dump classloader list
m: print memory usage
o: trigger logging
q: hide console
r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system and deployment properties
t: dump thread list
v: dump thread stack
x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to <n>

Do I clear any of these?

Go to you browser change your java setting. What browser are you using? And version number, too. Please.

You know, that XP will not be supported anymore next week, right?

Apr-03-14  twinlark: <Wannabe> <You know, that XP will not be supported anymore next week, right?>

I know. I'll get a new operating system soon, but until then I need XP operating. Not being able to access chessgames applications was driving me crazy.

Thanks.

Apr-03-14  LIFE Master AJ: ChessGames.com Statistics Page

Look at the very bottom of this page.

99.35% use the default PGN viewer. This means - very simply - that none of the other viewers work, and the overwhelming majority of users cannot get the JAVA problem solved, either.

One of the few cases where statistics reveal the real and painfully obvious truth, contrary to the famous quote by Mark Twain. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lies,_...)

Apr-03-14  Alien Math: <Look at the very bottom of this page.

99.35% use the default PGN viewer. >

Don't Get Me Started
The Power of the Default
Few users ever change a program’s default settings. Some don’t know that they can, others don’t know where to start. The rest consider it more trouble than it’s worth, or fear damaging a working installation.

UI guru Alan Cooper considers changing default settings to be the defining characteristic of an advanced user. Thinking of all the applications I use regularly, there isn’t one on which I’d consider myself an advanced user in this sense. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/mag...

Some myths that don't die: that lots of people rush to change the settings – and especially the default settings – on computers and other devices.

But many geeks who do change defaults forget that the majority of people don't. Those people assume – reasonably – that the device they bought for umpteen hundred pounds should already have the ideal setup. Changing defaults isn't unreasonable. But nor should it be necessary. http://www.theguardian.com/technolo...

Do users change their settings?
Back in the early days of PC computing, we were interested in how people used all those options, controls, and settings that software designers put into their applications. How much do users customize their applications?

We embarked on a little experiment. We asked a ton of people to send us their settings file for Microsoft Word.

What we found was really interesting. Less than 5% of the users we surveyed had changed any settings at all. More than 95% had kept the settings in the exact configuration that the program installed in.

Of course, this mean that 95% of the users were running with autosave turned off. When we interviewed a sample of them, they all told us the same thing:

They assumed Microsoft had delivered it turned off for a reason, therefore who were they to set it otherwise. “Microsoft must know what they are doing,” several of the participants told us. http://www.uie.com/brainsparks/2011...

Richard Taylor: < chessgames.com: <NZ Seniors> Sure we'd upload those games, but we'll have to see how good the official site is on releasing scores. We'll keep an eye on http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve... and see if download links appear. >

Thanks. I think the Arbiter Keong sends them so those with cell phones can upload. But otherwise I think the PGNS appear in a day or so.

In a few cases they also do live boards but that probably wont happen here.

Hope you get it fixed soon!

Richard Taylor: <Alien Math> I was a techician (not in computing but it involved some digital electronics in telecommunications) but as to programming etc I know almost nothing. I also leave everything more or less as it is. I hate it when things change so I switched off the automatic MS updates.

The only time or place I have seen autosave is on Blogger. I cant see it on Word which I use and sometimes some of my Browsers and or Word crash and I lose some data. Annoying, have to start again.

I did change the Java for chess viewing - I used the default for a long time - I think CG.com suggested the one I use now.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <chessgames.com: I think SwitchingQ and some others will be happy to see this bug regarding dangling-colorized-punctuation finally fixed:>

Excellent :)

The vast majority of CG users haven't even logged in, let alone spent much time viewing games, since the admins switched everyone to pgn4web. It's true most active users also use pgn4web, but that has more to do with the awesome power of default settings than with Java problems - considering active users only, the percentage is in the same ballpark as with previous default settings if not actually lower. Of course Java problems do boost the number, but that can't be helped.

(For what it's worth, I never switched back from "text only" when the Holiday Hunt was over.)

Yes. I have followed all the directions on the Java Help Page ... and I still cannot get the problem fixed.

Explain that one ... if you can. (I have Windows 7 and MSIE 11.)

Apr-03-14  Alien Math: Windows 7 and MSIE 11 browser,

Tips for using Java with Internet Explorer
http://www.java.com/en/download/hel...

Windows 7
Click on the Start button and then click on the Control Panel option. In the Control Panel Search enter Java Control Panel. Click on the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel.

Mixed Code Protection Options in the Java Control Panel

In the Java Control Panel, click on the Advanced tab. Expand the Mixed code (Sandboxed Vs. trusted) security verification option under the Security section.

Four levels of control are available

Enable - show warning if needed
This is the default setting.

Enable - hide warning and run with protections
This option suppresses the warning dialog. The code executes as if the user had clicked No from the warning dialog.

Enable - hide warning and don't run untrusted code
This option suppresses the warning dialog and behaves as if the user had clicked Yes from the warning dialog.

her not recommend last icon
Disable verification
This option is not recommended. This option completely disables the software from checking for mixing trusted and untrusted code, leaving the user to run potentially unsafe code without protections. http://www.java.com/en/download/hel...

Apr-03-14  Karpova: <chessgames.com: We used to allow people to voice complaints about other users here, and very quickly that was the entire content of this forum. Posting complaints also became a backhanded way to insult other users. The "trolls" soon figured out that they could come here and complain, and in some sense their posts were protected speech.

So we put an end to all of that many years ago. Now, all complaints must be submitted either via the Whistle function or to chess@chessgames.com.> chessgames.com chessforum

Domdaniel: <LMAJ> -- < the overwhelming majority of users cannot get the JAVA problem solved, either. > Or they've never tried. I think <Alien Math> is correct here ... most users are unwilling to try changing settings.

It's an interesting phenomenon, actually. Twenty years ago, as a Mac user, I had a heavily customized computer -- mainly due to memory constraints. But these days, with a PC, I rarely bother to customize anything.

Apr-03-14  LIFE Master AJ: And as the statistics show, not many people (LESS THAN ONE PER CENT!!!!!) have come close to solving this problem ...
