saffuna: Not mentioned in the text, the biography part. Again.

And Susan Polgar is never mentioned at all.

Apr-16-17  Alien Math: <saffuna> is correct, according to the newest shrine, he has never attended any university or met Susan Polgar
Apr-16-17  scout118: <Chessgames> That a top GM, much less a potential world championship contender, is even interested in this site lends prestige and credibility and not the other way around. Who else among the top 100 even bother with chessgames.com? If I were the owner or a stakeholder, I'd encourage top GMs to get involved, and unless anything posted is demonstrably false, I'd let it be.

saffuna: <scout118> It's possible to create something creating a demonstrably false impression by simply omitting information which is clearly relevant.

How would you feel if Kasparov got involved, edited his player biography, and omitted all mention of the Kramnik and Deep Blue II matches?

Apr-16-17  zanzibar: OK, for the record -

Here's a blog post where you can find a facsimile of the replaced Wesley So bio page:

https://zanchess.wordpress.com/2017...

It also includes the earliest archived version of his bio which I could find.

tpstar: "The Wesley So biography left out references to Susan Polgar, and President Donald Trump has to do something!"

<chessgames.com> Color me unimpressed with your Editors' site history knowledge. They try to tell us what happened here two years ago, and five years ago, and eight years ago, and twelve years ago, without knowing what happened here two years ago, and five years ago, and eight years ago, and twelve years ago. Maybe they should spend more time studying and less time lecturing.

I have prepared a Wesley So page test (Sulsol, Supremo, Wesley Chess Café, three basketeers, death threats) for your Editors to answer in real time, after their identities have been fully revealed under proper disclosure. Once the sheer inadequacy of their knowledge base is demonstrated for the record, perhaps they will be less enthusiastic about driving name players off this site.

I warned you about keeping them out of his player page, and out of his personal business, and I was right. If he leaves again, it is all on you.

saffuna: < If he leaves again, it is all on you.>

It's great to have Wesley So posting on his page, and it's nice to have him help edit his bio.

But if he insists on being the sole editor of his bio, and that bio does not accurately reflect his chess career, that's too high a price to pay to have him around.

Apr-16-17  chessalem: < does not accurately reflect his chess career>

of course it does.

its just that Susan is irrelevant...she and her husband have selfish motives far greater than seeing Wesley reach for the stars...

That makes their contribution trifle and not worthy mentioning in the bio of the greatest chess player who ever lived.

<trifle>

Just like the weight of a cotton ball bears to a weighing scale- i.e. none...ephemeral like a dust in the wind....

Apr-16-17  Alien Math: for a fan shrine it's acceptable, there are after all 861 games of his on the site, i'm sure they could fit somehow
Apr-16-17  scout118: <saffuna: <scout118> It's possible to create something creating a demonstrably false impression by simply omitting information which is clearly relevant. "If Kasparov got involved" is the operative phrase. I have the distinct impression that Mr. Kasparov doesn't care about chessgames, his bio in here or your opinion.

Real world question: how much marketing and promotional cash much a website owner pay to have a top 10 player or major personalities post and get involved at his site?

Frankly, most of us don't even read bios. As far as Wesley So's bio is concerned, it's far too lengthy and as for the content, are you familiar with the term "prerogative"?

His participation brings in traffic for legions who follow his career, and probably much more as people stumble upon this site, so why upset the apple cart for a few cry babies who somehow feel entitled?

Apr-16-17  chessalem: < website>

mind you, its more than that...it's an online community.

We have to live by rules set out by the council members as it pertains to urgent concerns which in the present case is bio making matters.

Surely the council has passed out a resolution against Wesley's appointed editorial powers but the mayor has exercised his veto powers.

The democratic process is underway to resolve the issue. No coup de etat is needed.

Why contrive & exaggerate? This is what was actually posted:

<chessgames ...Let's just remain calm and we'll get through this.>

saffuna: The administrator also posted the following:

<<Do players have right of approval over the bios on their player pages?>

No, absolutely not. >

And this:

<First, let is be clear: just because he's the second highest rated player in the world doesn't mean that he has some special privilege as a CG editor. In the world of chess, he's one in a million. As a CG editor, he's one of a few dozen.

Just because an editor rewrite a bio doesn't mean we have to keep it. The new feature that logs changes to articles (Edit History: Wesley So) allows us to "roll back" changes, in part of in full, to any point we deem necessary.>

Apr-16-17  scout118: <saffuna> You re-post as though it would carry more weight against points of view subsequently set forth.

Ultimately, there is a sweet spot and the business did ask everyone to "...just remain calm and we'll get through with this."

saffuna: What I re-posted is the position of chessgames.com.

They are simply not going to give Wesley So the right to post any bio he wants without any controls. It cannot be more clear.

Read what <tiggler> just posted. He explains it well.

<Ultimately, there is a sweet spot and the business did ask everyone to "...just remain calm and we'll get through with this.">

Yes, they did.. That does not mean they are going to permit a fraudulent bio to be published. (I am NOT saying that is what Wesley So would do. It's only a possibility.)

In any case, the bio at this moment is deeply flawed to say the least.

Apr-16-17  Tiggler: <saffuna> sorry, I just deleted it. I came to the conclusion that there are no such rules for for-profit companies. They can do what the hell they like. They are not public institutions and not democracies.

So it is Daniel's decision about what kind of business he wants to run. We are just consumers of his product, whose rights are: take it or leave it.

saffuna: I know I should stop arguing and just wait. The administrators will do the right thing.
Apr-16-17  scout118: <saffuna> I think I'm not alone in saying we value the integrity, honesty and humility of Wesley So against your opinion any day.

Again, as chessgames stated, calm down.

Apr-16-17  Alien Math: Might be willing to repair and return it to an earlier bio stage if things don't work out,

<(4) If it turns out that this entire situation is untenable we may turn our policy around 180° and adopt the wikipedia model of, "If you are a biographer you can work on any page EXCEPT your own." But I think before we do that, we should try it the above way. Biographer Bistro>

Apr-16-17  Tiggler: Anything connected to Wesley So always seems to turn into an uproar. I'm quite certain it is not his intention.
Apr-16-17  User not found: <If he leaves again, it is all on you.>

OMG! How is it Daniel's fault!? He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. I suggest Daniel ignores the "man" who's been harassing Wesley's countrymen for years and years, let's Wesley himself do the bio and gets one of the bio writers to add the parts he purposely misses out. Some people seem to think this is their own site when they're just 1 out of 100k people!

Richard Taylor: Another plan might be that players (anyone at all who has games) is given a 'site' where they put their version of their life and times etc. This leaves the main bio. where an asterisk on various facts etc would alert maybe to a link to the other page.

cg.com seem to want to see what So will say (of course he has no more rights than anyone else on here, that he is number 2, so what?): and they are not impressed with any 'rights' he might have outside legal issues and as long as there is no defamation and as this is cgs site of course they can edit and replace the old bio. Does he pay and is he a member? Even if he does it makes no difference. cg.com are right not to fold to any pressure (I don't think it is coming directly from Wesley So himself).

No one who wants the old or maybe another bio with the cooperation of Wesley So is questioning So's integrity of greatness as a chess player.

The United States is still a democracy with a Constitution and rights (we wont go into World History at this juncture that is for the Roggofskis): o.k. someone put the moc in democracy but I think it does count for something.

So I think that their policy of waiting to cooperate with Wesley so himself on this is good. I believe that Daniel has some eye trouble just now. Hopefully when that is cleared up they can all talk then work something out.

Of course, it would still be an issue if a little known player complained or somehow altered his or her bio but it would, I hope, be treated much the same. If it was John Smith of London a strong expert and a good fellow, but not famous, it wouldn't attract interest. So of course it is significant that the player is "Number 2" but in general he should be treated much the same.

It doesn't matter if Wesley So leaves. If he is precious about his bio and starting to allow people to re-write his bio or becomes arrogant then that would be a good thing. One of the things said of this site is that it is a "community". It is not run for the Super GMs. They get enough as it is.

Richard Taylor: <Tiggler: Anything connected to Wesley So always seems to turn into an uproar. I'm quite certain it is not his intention>

I noted this, it is true and strange indeed. As far I saw him in the US Champs he seemed pretty unassuming, with a sense of humour, I think he praised one of the opponents he beat, and so on. And he is clearly a very strong player. Perhaps, who knows, "the greatest" if anyone cares. But it seems it [the controversy [sies] doesn't [don't] come from So himself.

I think people get irrationally excited about "their" player. But I know players that are in fact super GMs or were such, and if they were on the up in my country I would not be very interested. But someone who is interesting, and has a sense of humour and so on and one likes (o.k., I don't mean a colourless person and I wouldn't necessarily be "against" a controversial and even quite arrogant or "despicable" or eccentric person as everyone has their quirks): that person I can understand getting excited about.

But the almost hysterical nationalism or patriotism that drives some of these debates (running in the background) is the problem. The fans can be a bigger problem than the person concerned.
