This line is clearly immortal:
The temperate zone of a (slightly soiled) oxygen planet Has little going for it Heh- Commuist civil war 'good timing' for publicizing nature poetry heh |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: OK <Dom> I have to ask: Were you being ironic when you said "I thought everyone knew about Dokdo"? You're not aware that NOBODY who is not Korean or a specialist in Korean-Japanese military history knows about it? Even the Japanese don't know about it- they could care less. But in Korea, every citizen is actually EXPECTED to take at least one ferry ride to these rocks... So as not to "let the side down".
Is it REALLY known in Ireland?
Maybe Places like Ireland, Poland, the Ukraine, and Central America DO know about Dokdo because, like Korea, they have been invaded 6000000 times by 1000000 different groups.. Ok seriously now tell me if you were being ironic?
You can ask every single person in the US and Canada what "dokdo" is and unless they were born in Korea or work for the Asian State Department they won't know... Mrs. Kim (retired) well I'm tired!!

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> One of the things I don't know is *what is known in Ireland*. I just know what I know. I 'found' Dokdo on a Dutch wikipedia page about 'Rotse van Liancourt' which is what it's called in Nederlandish. The English version is 'Lioncourt Rocks' which, as I said, sounds like an Anne Rice outtake. Maybe I *did* extend the old ironing board. But one can never have too much ironing. I've also heard of Rockall. It has the advantage of being almost impossible to land on. Kergoulen is also interesting if you like that sort of place. And certain islets in Puget Sound may technically belong to the Russians. |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hmmm what about <Novaya Zemlya>? I club of Islands that sound like Chessplayers?
Who else?
I haven't heard of <Rockall> but I've certainly heard of <Sweet Rockall>. Is it similar? |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Rockall, you will be amazed to learn, is a rock. About the size of a large building, with steep sides covered in birdshite. Completely uninhabitable or usable in any sane way, but whoever 'owns' Rockall also gets to 'own' all the undersea oil and gas nearby. Therefore it's claimed by Ireland, the UK, Denmark, Iceland, and possibly others. It's somewhere west of Scotland and north of Ireland. Mad patriotic types occasionally try to plant flags on it and have to be rescued. One Irish politician even changed his name to get the issue on the ballot paper. He had other issues too: <Sean Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus>, and I'm probably leaving several of his names out. Novaya Zemlya is claimed by that sweet northern land, <Zembla>, isn't it? What about <Fernando Po>? As an insular chessplayer, I mean. |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: Speaking of Novaya Zemlya, the Russian for 'islands' is OCTPOBA. Ostrova ... why do I think it's a month?
Heh. |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: <Dom> Risking to be flagged for off-topicness... Here's a semi-fun little dialoguechen from the GM TIMER DE MAN main page: -- ulrich321: I am guessing that this will be the last world versus x match. No one person can compete against a number of chess computers all calculating at the same time. Apr-07-08
twinlark: Wrong! GM Nickel has already dibbsed the next game. He wants revenge. Apr-07-08 ulrich321: He will have to hire some people then, that all process different variations on the computer. Otherwise how can he compete ? Apr-07-08
twinlark: He's competitive, don't worry about that.

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Crazy Russians!
Octopus= Island?
Nostromo
Under Western Octopuses
Octopus of Darkness
Lord Octopus
Good reading if you get marooned on an island. |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: <Jess>!! You should be a sleep -- and Dom is busy with his dictionaries, can't you see? |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> I had <The Hunt for Red Octopus> in mind, actually. Now listen to the Good Doctor and get your <Beautyifying Period of Unconsciousness> or 'sleep' as some call it. <Niels> Busy with my dictionaries indeed. I, um, noticed that there was a Russian fighter jet called Sukhoi. Far as I can tell, that means 'dry'. Crazy dry Russki humour? |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> Isn't there a certain kind of, um, *apocalyptic* mind-set among certain kibitzers, not mentioning any names like, for example, ulrich or ... oops. Apocalyptic. As in teenage-ish mega-colossal awesome-dude thoughts. "The last World game ... an immortal victory for humanity and engines ... etc." And all because of what Coppola said to Brando on the set of that Kurtzian movie: "Pucker lips now". |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: I almost forgot <McCarthy Island>. Somewhere in West Africa? Near the mouth of a river? But of course there's no chessplayer of that name. |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: Yep <Dom> -- Ullrich 3-2-1...ZERO Ignition! ---> Pucker lips too soon... BUT
Zwillingvögel held firm, zright? |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: <I, um, noticed that there was a Russian fighter jet called Sukhoi. Far as I can tell, that means 'dry'. Crazy dry Russki humour?> Well, I think the fighter jet ran out of fewels, which can also mean "out of gaz"... but I'm no expert... I know I keep repeating zat aber es ist für neunundneunzig luftballons Die Wahrheit. Klar... heh? |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: This is the end. Mne konyets. Fin de partie.
Hmm ... <endgame> is ambiguous in English, meaning either the terminal stage of the game, or the ending per se. The <finales>. The scents of an ending? |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: Bis später. |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Agent 99> Ist klar. <rot> luftballons? |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: <Domdaniel: <Niels> Isn't there a certain kind of, um, *apocalyptic* mind-set among certain kibitzers, not mentioning any names like, for example, ulrich or ... oops.> Um, I vote for, no... Unless "they" coincidentally coincide. Chess will even survive that. Now for "certain" kibitzers I shan't put my hand in the burning heat. For some I may. |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: <<rot> luftballons?> We should ask Deffi. I'm not a colour-person, but you may well be right.
|
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> How stupid of me. Um, that <incident with idiot> ... has it played itself out, dare one ask? |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: Which incident <Dom>? Oh, no no, all fair... Though the place there is quite surreal, to say the least... You mean the "cut the crsp" guy?
No - I'm fine in all fibres as far as I can tell...
I was just testing another of our (previous) convs a bit... Btw The Dutch Chship is heating up and Tiviakov seems to be in a spot o bother now... |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Niels> So many previous convictions, eh? And conversations too. I didn't know about the Dutch ch. I hardly ever follow events in realtime - I wait until they're over and then download the games. Maybe I miss out on the excitement... Did my *hot tip* l'Ami figure at all? |
|
| Apr-07-08 | | achieve: <Dom> Notre Ami is plodding along quite nicely, waiting in the wings... Too early to decide yet. PROVING your strategy!!
Seriously though the moderating issue is being taken to a frightening level at the C-page... Don't bother - I much prefer your moderation here.
|
|
Apr-07-08
 | | Domdaniel: Extremely moderate, that's me all right. What's a C-page? Not the haunt of the Lesser Spotted Gladioli, is it? I am Spartacus. |
|
Apr-07-08
 | | jessicafischerqueen: hi <Dom>!!
If you get a chance, would you consider giving me your opinion/analysis of the COMEDY I just posted in my forum? I'm most interested in the "psychological" aspects of this travesty that I accidentally won. Mrs. Smoot |
