Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <jess> And you have a reply, ma reine. Happy Pastille Day.

As Frogspawn's de facto <Foreign & Colonial Secretary> you have responsibility for lesser breeds outside the law. Like, say, chihuahuas.

Pinging the Royal Navy with cryptic 1980s quasi-linguistic cyber-ramblings is optional.

Jul-14-08  hms123: <Dom> I have now read "Entropanto" once quickly. You were quite prescient given that the new hot term today seems to be "viral." It brought to mind the work of a good friend of mine who is an "ethnomusicologist". His research is on using music and the oral tradition in Africa to spread information on the prevention and treatment of AIDS in places like Uganda. He has been quite successful in his efforts over the course of 20 or so years. He has a recent book out and a 2007 Grammy-nominated CD of the music that he taped in Africa.

I enjoyed the story a lot. It not only holds up well, but seems more relevant today given the culture in which we find ourselves. I may have more comments later. Thanks.--hms

Domdaniel: <hms> Thanks. The trouble with this prescience lark is that I should now be getting a clear read on the 2020s, and I can't. Not paying sufficient attention to the zeitgeist, I suppose.
Jul-14-08  hms123: <Dom> I can't get a clear read on tomorrow. Perhaps I should have been an historian. Best,

Jul-14-08  mckmac: <Domdaniel> <Yes. <Cable Hogue> or <Chinese Envoy> by John Cale. Dunno what they're about though. Chinese Envoy has a Maupassant link, however.>

Out of my depth on this one,the solo work of John Cale has pretty much passed me by.I did find the songs you mentioned though and with your permission,I'll plant them here for further reference.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGQw... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RjO...
Back in my tender teen-school years, the Velvet Underground was *the band* of only the thespians, our many misunderstood intellectuals, and budding pot heads.

I remember buying, then walking home with <the banana record>. I took the long way, album held tightly, banana side out.I lingered a little -you might only get one coolest moment.

Jul-15-08  ravel5184: <Dom> Isn't there something kind of like King Horse Chess called "Knightmate" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_... ?
Jul-15-08
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <ravel5184> I feared there might be, but I hadn't actually heard of it. I suppose somebody somewhere has already come up with every possible chess variant.

Never mind - we had some fun reinventing the wheel. And it'll always be King Horse Chess to me.

Domdaniel: Actually, Knightmate isn't identical to KHC. The 'king' which gets checkmated is a knight, but each side has two king-like pieces instead of knights.

So KHC is back in play ...

Interesting to read about that software which can be adapted to play millions of chess variants. I'd assumed the uselessness of standard engines would be a plus for KHC, but naturally there are nonstandard engines too.

Jul-15-08  ravel5184: <Dom> A friend of mine and I have invented a chess variant called Crazychess in which when you capture a piece, you give it to your opponent and, on their turn, instead of moving, they MAY place it on the board wherever they want. Regulations:

(1) No more than 10 checks in a row by the same player.

(2) No placing the same piece twice in a row, even if it is placed, ignored, and then placed (you may place A, 0, B, 0, A but not A, 0, A),

(3) No placing captures.

So in this position:

click for larger view

White to play can play (Q)d8#. Black cannot place his Queen on d8 to capture (no placing captures). Of course this would not be possible if the last piece White placed previously was a Queen.

So in problems you would put:

White last placement: (x)
Black last placement: (x)

If you have any comments post it on my forum.

Domdaniel: <ravel5184> Like I said, we're all reinventing the wheels -- variants like yours (but not totally identical) are described in the same wiki article you linked to.

I've played a similar one - Pocket Knights, I think - where you get to place a knight.

Hoot!

Jul-16-08  mack: My favourite chess variant is one I invented years ago which is a cross between the Royal Game and Conquer Everest (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1...). The winner was the first to get his king to the top of the mountain - but first you had to collect all your pieces by going around the perimeter, picking up pawns in place of ice equipment, knights instead of sherpas, etc. The whole thing was a big pile of wank.

jessicafischerqueen: <a big pile of wank.>

Unfortunately, I actually saw one of these in real life.

We were very drunk and playing a "mixed company" party game called "Creamo."

I'd tell you the rules, but it's probably best to fill in the blanks yourself if you've the stomach for it.

Are you referring to Mount Everest or to your game? The Chinese may not be happy with the former insinuation.

I once 'played' a chess variant which involved throwing the pieces at the wall, one by one. I, er, wasn't myself at the time, m'lud.

Although if I'd managed to scribble a few numbers on the wall I could claim to have invented darts.

Is a darts-chess hybrid on the, um, cards? We'd need pointy heads ...

Jul-16-08  mack: < Are you referring to Mount Everest or to your game?>

Oh, my hybrid game of course. Ridiculous nonsense, but *so* much fun. In fact, if you ever head over London way I insist that we play this all evening rather than normal chess.

<I'd tell you the rules, but it's probably best to fill in the blanks yourself if you've the stomach for it.>

Did you use Custard Creams or Bourbons?
