Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

And this is midgetism. The dimensionality of my blood-pump is irrelevant, and anyway I left it in San Francisco.

The other kind of heart - some sort of emotional quality? - is just a quaint superstition.

Aug-23-08  Red October: is that a regular Frogspawn or a serious frogspawn
Aug-23-08  Red October: The Chess GM came over
And he said Im gonna play White!
In the chessgames challenge
We would be in for quite a fight
If we are ready willing and able
To play a safe opening
He would go into the Petroff
The safest of all
And split half a point with me

But I said look here brother
Dont try fooling with that drawnik opening
Look here brother, you wont take half a point from me

Domdaniel: It *is*, however, some time since *chess* has been discussed here. Perhaps I should rectify this.

Awkward words, those. "Should" and "rectify" in particular.

In the spirit of King Horse Chess, I have now invented Boomerang Chess aka <The King does a Bungee jump from the Castle>.

Rules: exactly the same as normal, except that castling may be carried out any any time, regardless of where the king and rook are, whether they've moved, etc. Castling out of check is fine, but not into it. Castling *through* check is meaningless, as the king may spring back across the whole board.

The castling move involves placing the King on g1 or c1 (if white) and g8 or c8, if black. In all cases a rook - not necessarily the one that originally started on that side of the board - is moved simultaneously to the appropriate square (f1/d1 or f8/d8).

Simple as that.

For example, in this position:

click for larger view

Black, to move, is threatened with immediate mate. His Rook, hindered by its own pawns, seems powerless to intervene. But ... Bungee!

1 ... 0-0+

Leads to this position:

click for larger view

And Black picks up Queen for Rook and wins the pawn ending easily.

Note that White has no Rook and therefore can't escape by bungee-castling out of check.

Domdaniel: <Red> *That* is a regular Frogspawn.

Domdaniel: The arrival squares should be vacant: no bungee-castling with a capture. But white can play 0-0 even if f1 is attacked, as the King is not deemed to pass through en route to g1.

Domdaniel: <Jumpin' King Flash> And you can 'castle' as many times as you like during a game. This makes rooks more valuable, but I couldn't begin to calculate by how much.

Domdaniel: <Red> -- <safe chess> Heh. I certainly think so. But obviously not everyone agrees -- just look at the epidemic of poisoned pawns.
Aug-23-08  Red October: and funny enough, the Bishops are at the center of the epidemic ;-p

Domdaniel: Bishops are like that. And don't even mention Bishops in frames.
Aug-23-08  Harvestman: Wow! Bungee-castling chess. Here's a first try at an idea:

White to play:

click for larger view

White is threatened with mate by 1...Qxc2+ 2.Ka1 (or 2.Ka3) Qxa2#. Note that bungee-castling for white still leads to mate 1.0-0-0 (with Ra2) Qxc2#, or 1.0-0-0 (with Rg7) Qxd1+ 2.Kb2 Qxc2 3.Ka1 (or Ka3) Qxa2#.

White could try 1.cxb4 or 1.Bxb5, but neither of these are very clear. White wins an exchange, but black is a piece and a pawn up in the starting position, so black remains ahead on material, and several of the white pieces are en-prise.

1.Nxb4 regains the piece, but then black survives with 1...Nf3.

Therefore, 1.Qg2+!! (1.Ne3 fails to Rxg5) Kxg2 2.Ne3+ Kh3 3.Bg2+ (not mate) 0-0-0 (with either rook - note that 3...0-0 is not possible as black will land in check) 4.Ra8#.

Best I could do. Bet there's a flaw in it somewhere.
